  • Rack N Ruin is a typical action-adventure game and hits all the right points required to make it a good game, but does suffer a few minor drawbacks. The zoomed in view, terrible map and confusing puzzles could put some off, but there is a lot of charm to the game.

  • Overall, I found little to dislike in my time with Rack and his quest to ruin. It’s a solid game, strengthened further by its nostalgic elements. Any fan of the early Zelda games will surely love Rack n Ruin instantly, and whilst others may take a little long to warm to it, the game offers something for any fan of the old-school RPG adventure format.

  • Rack N Ruin is fun during the boss fights and puzzles when everything is running on all cylinders. The humor in the writing, the main character, the boss fights, the nostalgia -- they’re all positives. But the combat, exploration and map design are all lacking, mostly due to horrible checkpoints. It ends up being a game that will be fun for those looking for an old-school Zelda-like hybrid game, but the experience isn’t as great as you’d hope it would be.

  • Rack N Ruin is a lot of fun when everything clicks, but these moments just don't happen often enough. If you're into top-down button mashers, then this may be worth a look. Roaming the world, while confusing at times, can feel rewarding when you make new discoveries, and Rack himself is an endearing character. Some poor design choices bog the experience down, however, and it's a real shame – especially when you consider the types of games that clearly inspired this title.

  • Rack N Ruin is a game that copies from some of the best, but fails to understand what made those games work so well in the first place. Great visuals and audio combined with an intriguing premise help lift the game above total mediocrity, but terrible design decision bring it right back down. Luckily it is still copying from great games, so if you enjoy those you can find something to like here, but get ready for some extra frustration as well.

  • Ultimately, Rack N Ruin is a good game that easily could have been great with a few tweaks. Strangely, the game hides a lot of its enjoyment away from the player by not telling the player what to do next. While it can be an extremely frustrating experience at times, there are enough satisfying moments to recommend the game despite these issues. So, if you’re willing to dig into it, give Rack N Ruin a spin since there is a good game there, just hidden.

  • For this type of game, I feel like the combat and puzzle solving should be the strongest aspect on offer, but they ended up being the worst part of the experience. Outside of the lousy checkpoint system, there really isn’t anything too terrible about Rack N Ruin, it just doesn’t have enough going for it for me to unequivocally recommend it. If you don’t mind repeating areas and using the same few abilities over and over again, Rack N Ruin isn’t a total loss, just weather your expectations before you enter.

  • Rack N Ruin might suffer from an abundance of items and enemies, but there's enough worth experiencing in the game's humour, combat and distinct visual design to make it worth a playthrough.

  • In all though, Rack N Ruin on Xbox is fairly enjoyable. The storyline is fun to follow, the combat pretty interesting, and apart from it being far too easy to get lost, the design of the world and enemies is pretty spot on. With a better map Rack N Ruin could well have been a star, but frankly that element in itself is enough to bring it down a notch or two.

  • Rack N Ruin blends a lot of elements together, adding frustration by the bucket load. Through the smog of rage and ambiguity, there are things to enjoy, but they’re almost completely expunged by the finicky controls, absurd difficult spikes, and confusing design. Although not a complete failure of a top-down shooter, Rack N Ruin misses an opportunity to innovate and ultimately fails to be a memorable experience.
