- The level design and combat feel just as good as in past games, with a level of challenge that'll test those who have cut their teeth on modern bullet-hell shooters. The number of unlockable ships and the processes needed to do so will make players spend more time with this than most other titles in the genre, and that'll make up for the lack of extras like online scoreboards. Despite having a few issues in presentation and a rather annoying load upon death, R-Type Final 2 will please genre fans.
Cody Medellin · May 25, 2021 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - R-Type Final 2 is a wonderful follow-up to a classic series that I will always be down for more of. The steep price will turn off some, but once you get into the action it truly is one of the most satisfying genres around.
Ken McKown · May 18, 2021 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - Die-hard fans of the R-Type series will find plenty to love here, although we don’t think R-Type Final 2 does enough to modernize the series. We understand this dedication to stick to the series’ roots -especially since this is what the people crowdfunding the title signed up for- but we’re not convinced if R-Type Final 2 will have the same impact on newcomers.
SebastiaanRaats · May 16, 2021 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - In the end, I’m not sure we needed another R-Type, but I still enjoyed R-Type Final 2. For your money, you get a ton of content and lots of challenge. While I still fervently hope they patch the issues I pointed out, such as the unskippable intro and end credits, the base game is still solid. If you’re an Irem fanboy that is looking for the next great shmup, this is probably a safe choice.
Josh Speer · May 09, 2021 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - They’re nice enough, but they fade out to keep the focus on the enemies and your ship + the bit: The enemy designs are interesting and varied, and if you get bored with the ship you’re using there are plenty of options for swapping it out. Musically, the game is fine, but the explosion of yet another stupid death will get a bit annoying after a while.
Donald Theriault · May 09, 2021 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - R-Type Final 2 is a hidden gem. It’s a love letter to a small but ultra-dedicated fanbase of a cult franchise, something we rarely see in this day and age. It doesn’t try to reboot the franchise or make it more accessible to newcomers: all it wants to do is celebrate the history of the R-Type series with what we love the most from it, namely a stupidly challenging but addictive gameplay loop and a jaw-dropping amount of unlockable content.
Leo Faria · May 05, 2021 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - The game is an easy recommendation for anyone that has been pining for the shoot-’em-up glory days or any fan of arcade-style games. There is a lot of trial and error that is inherent with games of this nature and if rote memorization coupled with some light strategy in weapon choices doesn’t sound like your idea of fun, you might not find it here. There are multiple difficulty modes, however, that add continues and alter some boss patterns.
Bryan Lefler · May 05, 2021 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - It’s a shame that Granzella wasn’t a little forward thinking with its development, enticing new players into the fold to ensure the future of the franchise. As it is, R-Type Final 2 feels old-fashioned and punishing to a fault. There are simply better shoot ’em ups available that are faster paced, fairer, better looking and more accessible.
Richard Seagrave · May 04, 2021 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - The space-shooter genre has had an Arrowhead-shaped hole for the past 18 years and finally, that void has been filled. R-Type Final 2 is not here to revolutionize the genre, it’s merely here to remind us how great the series is and celebrate its long history. Although its old-school mentality may deter some, fans of the franchise will love this iteration.
Jaz Sagoo · May 04, 2021 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - R-Type Final 2 feels like part of the long-running series, building on key features and reworking some of its most memorable stages. But it’s hard not to feel let down by both its uninspired early levels and an unpleasant visual style that drains it of character. Still, it recovers towards the end and holds plenty of replay value for those looking to take on its exacting old-school challenges.
