  • It provides little satisfaction for sticking to its narrative, constantly reiterating on its plot and combat system to the point of exhaustion. And with limited diversity in its mission objectives, there's not enough to keep Project X Zone 2 fresh across its 60-plus hour campaign. Project X Zone 2 is at first promising, but not even its fan-service can save it from continually faltering in the face of its drudgery.

  • If you enjoyed the original Project X Zone then picking up the sequel is a no-brainer. It’s a bigger, better experience with a better cast of characters. That said, if the original left a bad taste in your mouth there isn’t enough sweeping changes to make you change your mind on the formula. Despite Project X Zone 2 being better than its predecessor in every way, it still suffers from a lot of the same issues.

  • Overall, Project X Zone 2 is an impressive sequel that evolves the formula established in the previous Project X Zone title. Clocking in my first playthrough at a little over 51 hours, it is a meaty experience that does not overstay its welcome. It definitely feels more like a realized, complete package with an awesome sense of closure when the journey ends.

  • For fans of Namco Bandai, Capcom, and Sega, Project X Zone 2 is full of the characters you love, in-jokes you'll laugh at, and over the top attacks and pairings that would make a FanFiction.net author blush. However, if you're just looking for a turn-based RPG to sink your teeth into, there's better to be had on the Nintendo 3DS.

  • This strategy RPG is a clever way to let fans of the Sega, Capcom, and Bandai Namco library jump into their favorite worlds with ease since the events have little to no bearing in the canonical continuity. The cast is pure fun but is soon overwhelming, where normally standout characters can hardly get a word in on the already impenetrable narrative.

PXZ2 is much more interested in matching up a diverse set of mascots for maximum humor and references to classic Japanese game series, which it skillfully handles most of the time. Nostalgia can only take PXZ2 so far in a lengthy campaign of average strategy gameplay, but it's an engaging old-school reunion while it lasts.

  • If the developers went back to the drawing board and designed a strategy RPG from the ground up and implemented the systems present in PXZ2 they would be off to a great start. However an overly long introduction that becomes boring after a few hours distracts from what is otherwise a decent game.

  • Project X Zone 2 succeeds by following the simple sequel formula that many developers seem to ignore: use what worked with the first game and try to fix everything that didn't. This is flat out a better game than its predecessor. It's better paced, the action is more eye-catching, and the story is told in such a way that you don't have to be familiar with the properties covered to enjoy it.

  • But as enjoyable as this can be one battle each sitting, it overstays its welcome. But I’m happy it exists, and takes the concept that established characters can be played with like the Play-Doh these devs may have snacks on as children.

  • A single battle in Project X Zone 2 can drag on forever, and its overarching story doesn't make much sense. Still, its hilarious character interactions and chaotic fights embody what a video game should be: Fun.
