  • So if you’re looking for something a little different in the FPS genre on the Switch – and don’t want to delve into the past – then Project Warlock might be worth considering. Yet the ports of the first two Doom titles ultimately represent far better value, and offer a much more rewarding and balanced experience.

  • Project Warlock is a delightful tribute to 90’s shooters. It manages to find a perfect balance between old and new all the while still being its own entity. The console port is exceptionally well handled and offers some great options for players. The game attention to detail really helps make PW stand out among others retro titles in the genre. If you are looking for a 90’s nostalgia trip or just a fun shooter, check out Project Warlock over on the PlayStation Store.

  • The underpinning fundamentals are certainly there, the attention to detail is coded in nicely, and the continuous improvements made since launch display a progressive attitude to evolve. I may not have quite warmed towards Project Warlock as much as I would have hoped, but I for one am very much looking forward to seeing Jacob Cislo’s next chapter in game development.

  • Overall, Project Warlock is one for the fans. It will more than likely appeal to those who fondly remember old-school first-person shooters like Doom. There’s some decent action with plenty of retro visuals and a steep learning curve, though there could be a better tutorial or guidance system. I wouldn’t say it did much to convert a non-shooter fan like me, but I still found enjoyment. Those who relish the good ol’ days of FPS will appreciate this homage to better times.

The game looks like its inspirations with pixelated enemies and chunky corridors. As I mentioned the enemy variety is second-to-none and the music and accompanying sound effects are outstanding. This game was a touch louder than other titles on my Xbox, so I always had to turn down the volume when booting it up. Still it really put my sound system through the test and sounds amazing.

  • Project Warlock is a first-person shooter created by a tiny indie team that punches way above its weight. While its reason for existence may initially seem to be for paying homage to its genre’s forefathers, Project Warlock quickly grows into a game all its own, providing an enthralling shooter experience all the way to the end.

  • Other than some incommodious bugs and a lackluster story, Project Warlock on PS4 is a stylistic gem, with an incredible soundtrack, that pays homage to its predecessors while providing an extremely high skill ceiling.

  • The visuals look distinctly retro and pixelated by default, with some detailed and destructible sprite-based objects and monsters, however, the Unity Engine powering the game also provides “modern” lighting and particle effects that greatly enhance the experience – primarily by splattering the walls and floors with the blood and entrails of your demonic foes.

  • Fast-paced gameplay, tight, secret-filled levels, a fitting soundtrack, and sprite-based graphics all add up to a game that feels ripped from another era, while introducing a few ideas of its own to keep things fresh. Some balancing issues and an occasionally-glitchy weapon wheel hardly detract from what is ultimately a modern blast from the past.

  • Project Warlock is a blood-splattered love letter to retro-shooters, but still there’s plenty here to hook you even if you’ve never experienced the titles that inspired it. A glorious, gruesome outing, Project Warlock is sometimes unforgiving, but once you push past the first few levels, it’s a bloody joy to play.
