  • Pro Evolution Soccer 2018 is one of the most solid (yet least flashy) sports sims on the market. Every year, PES seems to further carve out its own identity and plant a flag for players who want a deeper, less forgiving, and yet somehow more familiar soccer-playing experience. Everything in PES 2018 is earned, and while some of it still could use some polish, it continues to take steps forward. How long it can withstand the tidal wave of FIFA’s recent successes and licensing dominance, however, remains to be seen.

  • You definitely can’t go wrong buying Pro Evolution Soccer 2018, as it plays as good as ever, but those who bought last year’s game might want to wait until next year’s installment if they’re waiting for that next evolution. That’s not to say that there aren’t improvements, as the subtle tweaks and additions do add up to a better game, but these are more quality of life fixes rather than changes that’ll sweep the player off their feet.

  • PES 2018 is Konami’s classic back at its strongest on PC, and the small changes to the feel of the gameplay have genuine ramifications on the pitch. It might lack the big budget feel of FIFA, most keenly felt in the match atmosphere, commentary and the lack of TV-like production values, but it plays a damn fine game of football.

  • For me, the priority of a sports simulator (and any other game, in fact), is always gameplay. On the pitch, I struggle to think of anything I’d amend. PES 2018 is a ton of fun to play, and I have no doubt I’ll be playing it right up to the release of PES 2019. However, with the gameplay sorted, it is absolutely crucial that the next game completely overhaul its presentation and expand on Master League, a great mode that is starting to look creaky. The ball is in your court, Konami (soccer doesn’t even have courts, I’m so sorry).

  • Pro Evolution Soccer 2018 is, simply, the most realistic rendition of the beautiful game so far. While the atmosphere is lacking and game modes are in need of some improvement. Konami still desperately need to overhaul the commentary and fix the licensing issues. Fortunately, the on-pitch action more than makes up for any problems you may encounter.

  • PES 2018 is great off the pitch, but its very foundation begins to disintegrate when the whistle blows for kick-off. If you’re only planning to play co-op modes with friends, then PES 2018 is a blast – even though it’s not quite possible to play a slower, methodical match against another human due the openness of the pitch and the ease of stringing together an incisive passing move.

  • The definitive PES on PC, if you can get a game online.

  • All in all, the line on the graph that is PES’ progression as a series has gone up with Pro Evolution Soccer 2018. A game that might have ran the risk of deterring its loyal fan-base, the improved physicality to player animations and actions only adds another layer to the series’ already layered strategy that feels genuinely entertaining to watch as it is to play, regardless of the outcome.

  • PES 2018 is not without its flaws, many of which will both frustrate and disappoint you, but its excellent on-pitch gameplay helps it overcome most of those hurdles and come out the other side an extremely enjoyable football sim

  • PES 2018, then, is the proverbial game of two halves. Off the field, it's sorely lacking; online modes and server issues leave much to be desired, and the game's presentation as a whole is lagging behind the competition--even if the PES community produces some sterling work in recreating the unlicensed kits every year.
