Pokken Tournament is a game that deserved a second chance. A Pokémon fighting game is still one of the best concepts out there. I wish it was more fleshed out, and perhaps a sequel will do just that, but DX marks yet another solid first-party title to add to the Switch’s already stellar year one of games.

  • Pokkén Tournament DX may only provide a few benefits for returning fans, but the improved local multiplayer and expanded roster may be enough to draw back the old crowd. Overly simple AI and easy Challenges make the game’s single-player mode a breeze, but new players may find that simply playing with their favorite Pokémon is enough to enjoy the fight.

  • Pokkén Tournament DX is a competent fighter, but more geared for fans of the Pokemon franchise. As someone who’s Pokemon knowledge is casual at best, I felt the story was painfully boring, I really didn’t care about the characters and couldn’t really appreciate all the cameos of Pokemon characters that littered the arenas.

  • Pokken Tournament is a very solid game. It has well refined mechanics that create a fun battling experience. The fact that each character feels unique and plays completely differently from any other given character helps to keep the matches feeling fresh and diverse, it also forces players to adapt and adjust their strategies. On the downside, there are some noticeable balancing issues. The Ferrum League mode, while fun, can feel redundant after a while

  • If you’re a fan of fighting games or Pokémon in general then you’re definitely going to want to check this game out. It looks great on the Switch and being able to play on the go is a major plus! While it’s lacking in main game content, and Pokémon to choose from there is still something so fun about jumping into the arena and beating the crap out of your opponent.

  • If you loved the first game and want to experience the game again with a much more thriving community of Switch owners, then Pokken Tournament DX should certainly be on your radar.

Pokken Tournament DX plays nicely on the Switch (except in split-screen co-op). It's a great fighter to take on the go.

  • Pokkén Tournament DX remains a robust, fun and accessible fighter. It sports some incredible mechanics, with the seamless shifts between 2D and 3D planes easily helping to make each brawl feel exciting. But there isn’t much improvement on the original away from new content, meaning that those who have pummeled their opponents into submission on Wii U may be more conflicted about a second purchase – although it will be where the competitive community shifts to.

  • Pokkén Tournament DX is a bit odd, because although I can’t help but sing its praises, not much here is new, and I don’t actually know who was asking for a resurgence. Still though, the Pokémon fighter is loads of fun and still looks like a great spectacle in motion - the supers just look fantastic. But if you’re looking to play this by yourself, you’re likely to be very disappointed.

  • Solid and definitely has an audience. There could be some hard-to-ignore faults, but the experience is fun.
