  • The visual overhaul makes this the best looking Pokémon yet. Naturally, the amount of Pokémon on offer is almost insurmountable and will have you catching them all for quite a while, but be aware, they are a needy lot.

  • Whether you're an old Pokémon fan or a brand new one, there's loads to love about Sun and Moon. These might just be the very best mainline Pokémon games ever.

  • The core gameplay is there in new forms, the extras to the series are hit or miss, and the overall storyline is sweet but poorly paced- but it’s still an excellent game that will continue the franchise for another twenty years. That is perhaps all you need to know about Pokémon Sun and Moon; it’s an easy sell if you have even the most passing interest in the Pokémon franchise, and will always remain that way regardless of what it does wrong or right.

  • Pokemon Sun and Moon challenged me to try the franchise’s formula in a brand new way, and despite my reservations the games came through in a big way. Trials are a fantastic alternative to Gyms, the Z-Moves are flashy and powerful if also lacking in strategic risk, and the world of Alola is bright and colorful. There are a few odd nitpicks to throw at the two games, but it’s hard to argue that Pokemon Sun and Moon is the best thing to happen to Pokemon in years.

  • Pokémon has been a classic series for twenty years and with 2016 being its 20th, Pokémon Sun and Moon is a perfect way to celebrate such a milestone. It still holds all the charm and fun from the original titles yet creates an entire new world to explore. It’s a must-have for fans and a worthy place to begin for newcomers. The future of the Pokémon series shines bright like Pokémon Sun and beautiful like Pokémon Moon.

  • Pokemon Sun and Moon are a fantastic new addition to the storied franchise. They make improvements in a ton of key areas, shaping the experience so that it is more fun, less frustrating, and just overall more enjoyable. The new mechanics, such as Z-Moves, range from good to great, but the lack of some older features might annoy a few players. There are alternatives though, so this is still a top notch entry, even for longtime fans.

  • Sun and Moon may just be another iteration of the Pokemon formula, but it's the best we've seen so far. So many subtle quality-of-life changes, as well as tweaks to old features and helpful new features add up to make Pokemon's final hurrah on the 3DS one to remember. Just don't go expecting anything fantastic out of the story.

  • Gen VII is only let down by a tendency to drag its feet with unnecessary dialog, animations, and tutorials, a situation compounded by the repetitive Z-Moves and the sometimes grueling SOS Battles. At this point, Game Freak knows how to make an excellent game and always goes above and beyond in making a truly expansive sequel. Now it just needs to create more fluid experiences overall.

  • Aside from some disappointing story elements and frame rate dips in battles, Sun and Moon encapsulate 20 years of series strengths and introduce enough freshness to keep the series running strong. Those looking for a new Pokémon adventure will undoubtedly find a lot to love in this excellent addition to the Nintendo 3DS library.

While this is a pretty great RPG, it’s still not for everyone. The combat has some depth to it, but it can eventually get old, and the main formula has and doesn’t change much at all in the grand scheme of things. If you weren’t a fan of Pokémon games before, this one will probably not change your mind, but any RPG fan and Pokémon player will have a pretty fun time exploring the Aloha Region, and the improvements to the quality of life make it a fun, simple, and pretty enjoyable Pokémon experience that can easily last players a good 30 hours.
