  • All taken together, Phantom Breaker offers a couple hours of mindless, mass-bashing fun. It has some of the same charm as old-school beat'em up arcade games like Turtles in Time, but with an Japanese anime theme. It's fun for a time, but it passes quickly, and it's very easy to move on without looking back.

  • Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds is a great fighting game with colorful graphics and a great soundtrack. The story is a bit short but you can keep coming back beating your own high scores or take on players online. Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds and PS Vita are a great match and if you like the retro look and the feel of an old-school fighter this is a must have!

Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds may have nice animations, interesting, old-school-inspired environments, and the heart of a classic beat-'em-up, but its gameplay pales in comparison to its more quality-oriented, difficult, and well-balanced competition. It's an easy, almost mindless romp. Should you throw caution to the wind and download it anyway, go in with seriously tempered expectations. Even with unlockable characters, Trophies to earn, a surprisingly deep leveling system, and multiple difficulty levels, it's hard to imagine truly engaging with Battle Grounds for very long.

  • Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds is a fun, fast paced brawler, with a strong retro presentation that runs out of steam all too quickly. Repetitiveness almost over shadows everything that it does well, and the ghost town multiplayer modes certainly don’t help either. That said, if you’re up for an old school beat-‘em-up – with some modern additions – then this title may still be worth rescuing.

  • Regardless of the game’s pitfalls, Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds is a lovely little title for XBLA. It exudes charm and personality, and it’s clearly been handled by a team that really believes in their game. With a solid fighting engine, plenty of room for customization, a copious offering of modes, delightfully oldschool graphics and sound and some solid controls, Battle Grounds is a game that should be played by anyone who loves nostalgic beat’em ups, especially ones that are very stylized and very Japanese.

  • Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds is a pleasant surprise. I'm a huge fan of brawlers and hadn't heard a thing about this game; it's not often that I download something on Xbox Live Arcade sight unseen. Usually, this spells complete disaster - but not this time. Despite some rough edges, Battle Grounds is a unique and deep quest for fans that have maxed out all of their characters in Castle Crashers and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

  • With its colorful characters, gorgeous sprite graphics, 8-bit tracks, and multiple game modes, there's a lot to love here. I must admit, while I wasn't familiar with the fighting game on which it's based, I'm seriously hoping it passes through localization, as I'd love to play that title as well. Whether playing couch co-op or online, it's a great way to spend an afternoon with friends, though hopefully they'll patch for having a more stable connection for the latter.

  • I have a hard time recommending Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds to anyone. If you're obsessed with 2D brawlers and love Japanese animé, I strongly recommend you give the demo a try before shelling out any cash. The redundant and dated gameplay, coupled with weak production values, make this a forgettable experience that won't keep you entertained for very long.

  • ...you’ll have some fun here, but Battle Grounds still falls short of being the sleeper hit it could have been
