  • Although Payday 2 is an early first-person shooter to hit the Nintendo Switch, it provides an average experience that’s worth skipping. The level of character customization is great and brings a sense of ownership to the adventure, but enemies are incredibly hard to see at times, often leaving the player squinting after every shot fired.

  • Ultimately it doesn't matter which way you decide to play; you're having to compromise somehow, which is the story of Payday 2 on the Switch. It is an entirely functional video game that (in most respects) looks, feels and plays like Payday 2, and given the right circumstances, can also be a bit of fun. But given how readily available it is on other platforms and the concessions made with this version, it doesn't highlight Payday 2's unique brand of shooting and looting the way other platforms have for years.

  • As a newcomer to Payday 2, my time spent descending on Washington DC to start a crime spree has been filled with as much genuine laughter as it has with successful heists. While the whole experience can feel more than obtuse, those that take the time to learn the gameplay mechanics that underpin it will soon find this a game that’s worthy of the endless hours that they will spend with it. It’s a shame that performance niggles readily detract on occasion, but with a little more spit and polish, I am sure that anarchy can reign once more with hindrance.

  • Should you get Payday 2 on Switch? Well if you want an interesting multiplayer shooter and don’t have access to it on other platforms, sure. Otherwise? Probably not. Maybe wait to see how things are after an update or two.

  • I was really surprised with how entertaining Payday 2 turned out to be, especially when doing solo missions on handheld mode. It really fit well with the Switch’s portable nature. Online play was also entertaining, but the Switch’s lack of proper online chat made the experience a lot less interesting than on other consoles. Despite those issues and the slow progression system, I had a good time with Payday 2. It is, so far, one of the best ports of a more complex game to the Nintendo Switch, without a doubt.

  • Playing Payday 2 in portable mode is a bit of a hassle, especially when playing missions that take place in darker environments. If you already enjoy Payday 2 on another console, save your hard earned (or stolen) dollars and buy another game. If you’re new to Payday 2, just make sure you have some friends to play online with, because playing solo is just awful.

It’s nice that Switch owners can cash in on Payday 2’s co-op action, which remains great, and the new playable character has a skill set that introduces a new support style. But this version is handicapped by its lack of voice communication tools. Even if it’s updated to parity with the PC version, that’s a tough pill to swallow in such a cooperative game.

  • There is no excuse for an online co-op focused game to ship with the online side of things not working. It is even more inexcusable that a patch hasn't been released yet to remedy the situation. At the time of writing, the game has been available for three weeks and is still broken. Payday 2: Crimewave Edition is an embarrassing, broken release that should be avoided by consumers and is a black eye on the current state of video game publishing.

  • Overall, whilst Payday 2: Crimewave Edition is not perfect, it’s a unique title that offers an unparalleled co-op experience. It’s not short on content either, with a vast amount of jobs to complete across numerous difficulty levels that cleverly modify the objectives and enemy waves within them rather than just altering damage parameters.

  • Payday 2: Crimewave Edition is deserving of two separate scores; One based off playing the game solo or with strangers, and the other playing with friends. It's truly a completely different experience. The former had me irritated and frustrated, usually resulting in a failure of the job, while the latter had me laughing, on the edge of my seat, and itching for "just one more" mission. Sadly, that's not how we do things around here, so I'll just have to settle on one.
