- Outward stand out from other survival titles. As stated earlier, the game can be a challenge, to say the least. However, it manages to set itself apart from its contemporaries by smartly incorporating compelling role-playing game elements while still keeping itself rooted within the bounds of its established genre. With its unique spell casting system, the welcome inclusion of split-screen co-op, and an unforgiving yet rewarding campaign, Nine Dots Studio’s Outward serves as a revitalizing shot to the arm that delivers a much-needed medication to help soothe that bothersome itch for a different take on the RPG and survival genres.
Greg Peterson · Apr 24, 2019 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Though filled with interesting ideas and mechanics, Outward is let down by poor combat, dated visuals, and performance issues. Hardcore RPG fans are likely the only people who will want to delve into the nitty-gritty of this title.
Nathan Gibson · Apr 19, 2019 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - Outward is an interesting title. It takes a lot of things other games have done and mixes it pretty well together to make a difficult but rewarding RPG. Some may find it pretty difficult, but taking one’s time with it and knowing when to fight and when to run will make all the difference, and if you’re having some issues, you can always get someone else to help out via co-op. Players looking for a mix of RPG and survival will have a great time even with its technical hiccups here and there.
Drew Leachman · Apr 16, 2019 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - Outward isn't revolutionary, but there's a lot to be said for the sense of achievement the game grants in both single and multiplayer.
Ashley Shankle · Apr 14, 2019 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Outward is a game that’s hard to describe because the playing experience is so much of the game. Reading about it, or looking it over, you see all the places where it shouldn’t work. Feature bloat, a high learning curve that never really stops curving, graphics that fail to impress by a wide margin, clunky looking mechanics, and a lack of anything defining to set it apart.
Thomas Medina · Apr 12, 2019 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Outward brings a bunch of new and interesting stuff to the RPG scene with its different mechanics and features. Since it is extremely unforgiving and hard to manage, it is very likely players will put this game away after the first few hours of play due to the sheer effort it required. People who will go through the beginning and go for the long game will truly enjoy the reward at the end of their adventure.
VikingTeddybear · Apr 11, 2019 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Outward is harsh and occasionally frustrating, but it does what so few games do. It requires you to put real thought into the choices you make, and it makes those choices feel like they really matter. Most of all, it makes you approach each and every encounter as if your life depended on it—even though you never die.
Christopher Livingston · Apr 10, 2019 Reviewed on PCRead full review - There is the seed of a better RPG here, but it’s buried under too much rough terrain. At its best, Outward can offer novel experiences, a good challenge, and a fun way to play with friends. It spends more time at its worst, though, and that’s boring and tedious.
DM Schmeyer · Apr 10, 2019 Reviewed on PC, PS4, XB1Read full review - Build-crafting ends up being more interesting than the combat itself, and the story acts only as a serviceable distraction, leaving undertuned survival and exploration at the forefront, which ends up being too lenient to carry the experience. It's still a solid playthrough and unique enough to consider worth experiencing -- especially with a friend. The best case scenario is that Outward serves as a successful proof-of-concept that leads to an experience down the road that hits a bullseye where Outward just narrowly missed the mark.
Bryan Vitale · Apr 09, 2019 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Outward’s harsh difficulty, its hands off structure, and its constant stat management wont be for everyone. This is one hell of a demanding RPG, and as such, it can feel less like an adventure and more like a full-time job. Still, the game deserves a lot of praise for its ambition, its depth, and for its choice-driven structure, but in the face of its poor design choices, its awkward combat, and its lack of visual polish, it’s hard to wholly recommend.
