- Outlast is less than a year old (if counting the original PC release) but it’s already cemented itself as one of the scariest games we’ve ever played. It’s also one of the strongest debuts from a new developer, and Red Barrels should be applauded for their effort. Outlast won't be for everyone, but if you have even an inkling of interest in the genre, then it's absolutely worth checking out. Let it be known that Outlast is a genuinely stressful and nerve-racking experience, but that’s exactly what a true survival horror game should be, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
Anthony Bacchus · Jul 19, 2014 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - The game loses a little of its lustre towards the end, as you become a touch too familiar with the 'collect three fuses/valves/keys to continue' template applied between the jump scares, and the tedious sections where you'll have to hide under a bed and wait until the coast is clear. Thankfully, its relatively short run time means that no one section is completely overplayed.
Aoife Wilson · Jun 25, 2014 Reviewed on XB1 - A genuinely disturbing and terrifying game that'll have you jumping out of your seat in fright. It's a little short at around six or so hours, but the experience Outlast delivers is well worth the price of admission.
Jaz Rignall · Jun 20, 2014 Reviewed on XB1 - Outlast is a virtual tour through a hall of terrors. Even playing the game in full daylight makes me uneasy. However, the game's overall level design and gameplay were sacrificed at the altar of fear. If you're looking for an experience that will get your adrenaline pumping, Outlast is hard to beat, but if you’re looking for a meatier horror experience then you might want to run past this one.
Ben Reeves · Feb 25, 2014 Reviewed on PS4 - Though Outlast is an indie title, it has proven that the dwindling survival horror genre still has life. It's worth noting that the blood, gore, and male genitalia may seem excessive at first, but simply serve to show the horrid conditions and treatment these inmates received and lived in, and indeed what they are capable of.
Garri Bagdasarov · Feb 13, 2014 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Even though Outlast relies too heavily on Hollywood tactics for its scary moments, it’s still not a bad game. There’s actually some fun in traversing the asylum with friends around, or by streaming it online via the PlayStation 4?s many sharing options. ...There’s plenty of room in the survival horror market for someone to come along and really revitalize the genre. Outlast just isn’t that game.
Luke Brown · Feb 13, 2014 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Outlast is one of, if not the scariest game I’ve played. It’s creepy, suspenseful and terrifying at times. It does lack variation in terms of the objectives you complete, but the unpredictable jumps and scares should be enough to maintain that nail-biting tension you will find yourself strangely craving for. Just remember to turn off the lights and try not to cover your eyes, because you’re in for one hell of a ride.
Dan Jones · Feb 12, 2014 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - In the end, though, Outlast's few weak moments are overshadowed by the effectiveness with which it so often gets inside your head and scares the hell out of you. You sometimes end up feeling like you're just going through the motions the game requires you to go through, but when the ride is as well designed as this, the best thing to do is just get in and hold on tight.
Carolyn Petit · Feb 11, 2014 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Outlast doesn’t sound amazing, it’s not beautiful, its story is short and its trophies are terrible. But during the course of your adventure you’ll experience more thrills and frights than any other game currently on the market. A true survival horror, Outlast marks the return to consoles of a resurgent genre. It’s well worth playing.
Lee Bradley · Feb 09, 2014 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - All in all, Outlast is a fantastic game that really is one of the highlights of the horror game genre, creating a tense, chilling atmosphere while giving you lots of great memories(or not so great ones, depending how you look at it). Outlast is sure to make you tense and free for Playstation Plus members? Thats a steal! Everyone who thinks they can cope with this kind of game should definitely check it out. It’s one of the genre’s greats.
