  • While it’s commendable that OTXO attempts to freshen up the top-down shooter genre by mixing in roguelike qualities and a time-bending mechanic, the result, unfortunately, feels at odds with itself.

  • OTXO kept me roped in for nearly 25 hours- so on the whole? I’d say I had a good time.

  • There inherently lies my issue with OTXO. It really hits the classic Hotline Miami tropes. Kickass techno music that enhances the action? Check! Fast paced shooting and response action? Check! Limited but expressive pixel art? Check! Unfortunately, after that, it all comes to varying degrees of skill, to the point that progression can be entirely halted if you get on tilt. I personally had to step away from the game because the more frustrated I got the more time I wasted making stupid mistakes, and with OTXO, those are the ones you just can’t make.

  • Otxo is a fair top-down shooter with roguelite elements. The faster you slay, the more you pay. It’s quite derivative and some of the default control mapping leaves a bit to be desired, but it’s fairly fun. It’s a fair way to spend a few hours, if not massively engaging. If you liked the Hotline Miami games this’ll be your thing. Us, we thought it was OK.

  • If you’re a fan of violent twin-stick shooters, it’s well worth checking OTXO out. Its roguelite elements perhaps don’t do it any favours, especially when there’s not much that keeps its gameplay feeling fresh between one run and another, but it provides a lasting challenge. Ultimately, we’d recommend players check out Hotline Miami first that offers a very similar experience. And if they still want more, OTXO will be waiting.

  • OTXO doesn’t change the top-down shooter formula that we’ve all become accustomed to, but it does couple some gameplay elements from the best to ever do it, making it an undeniably satisfying game to play.

  • OTXO is a fun hybrid that does enough to capture the attention of players looking for a fast and tension-filled action experience. Kicking down doors and killing enemies via a combination of bullet time and good use of the dodge is always fun. The game rewards fast movement, quick thinking, and good choice of drinks.

  • Otxo has very little to offer beyond its core gameplay loop, and it gets repetitive after a while, but it's responsive and fluid enough that you'll find fun during shorter play sessions. Fire it up in short bursts, like, oh, say, when you're on the train. Just beware of masked men.

  • The game has the potential to grab the eyes of many and can have so much more brought into it. The retro feel to the game with its pixel art in the interactions and overall design, might for some, not be to their liking but it’s worth giving a try anyway. OTXO does not make you feel mocked or taunted.

  • It took everything that worked in those beloved action games, gave players a bit more leeway with an improved health system, and dialed things up to eleven, be it with its insane soundtrack, aggro-as-hell nature, and especially its roguelike elements. They just fit in perfectly with this particular arcade-like gameplay loop. This little gem is one of the best sleeper hits of 2023 so far. With this game, you can finally stop asking Devolver for a Hotline Miami III. This one is even better.
