  • Overall, JRPG fans with an interest in the Japanese idol culture will find Omega Quintet pretty enjoyable. It’s obviously aimed at a niche market and is perfectly happy at doing so, but unfortunately for everyone else the lacklustre story will probably be a barrier to their enjoyment. The battle system remains to be praised though, and with a zany band of characters this is definitely a JRPG worth trying for those interested in the genre.

  • There are a few caveats to be had, especially how the game doesn't go far enough with what it drew inspiration from, but I had a good time with Omega Quintet and enjoyed a bit of everything it offered. This is a game meant to cater towards the same super niche audience that Hyperdimension Neptunia serves, so you should know whether this game is for you.

  • Omega Quintet is a game at battle with itself. On one end, its multifaceted battle system has the potential to make JRPG fans drool. ...It’s cute and lighthearted, but at some point you want to see something actually happen instead of just listening to characters babble about nothing. Omega Quintet will be best enjoyed by those who know exactly what they want out of the game. The comprehensive battle system and simulation are well-executed and unique, even if the rest of the experience offers only wobbly support for them.

  • Though there's nothing explicitly wrong with it, Omega Quintet feels far too much like a "by-the-numbers" Compile Heart title to do justice to the studio's first current-gen effort. Its narrative and aesthetic "fluff" ultimately fail to support its dense and otherwise engrossing mechanical heart. For a game about a bunch of girls finding their voices and path in the world, it has distressingly little "voice" of its own.

  • It’s kind of hard to give sum up Omega Quintet. It does some core things right, like the combat and the numerous places to explore, but it does a lot of little things wrong, such as the huge amount of fluff and the useless crafting system. I think a sequel would have a lot of potential, but as it stands Omega Quintet might not be worth your money, unless you want to skip by most of the story and dialogue and just focus on the game’s solid combat system.

At the end of the day, Omega Quintet is a solid first effort on the PS4 for IF/Compa with a neat premise and an enjoyable combat engine. All that’s left to do to move forward is to be rid of this archaic progression structure and before we know it, they could very well become a powerhouse in the JRPG arena.

  • It's a crying shame, because streamlining the experience and cutting out the worthless fat would have gone a long way to making this recommendable. Right now, though, it's only worth a look for JRPG fanatics that are starved and in desperate need of sustenance. It's by no means a bad game on the whole, but it opts to float idly on the side of numbingly average rather than attempt to stand out in any way. Well, unless you're making music videos.

  • As it is, we have a great battle system and the ultimate in the sheer amount of customisation features, hampered by a metric-butt-ton of boring dialogue, dragging cutscenes which are boring to watch and boring characters. Omega Quintet could have been so much more.

  • Omega Quintet is a competent role-playing game that builds on Compile Heart’s previous successes. The combat system works well and there’s an absolute glut of content for those willing to stray from the beaten path. That said, it’s not a particularly stunning game to watch, looking more like a remaster than a title genuinely meant exclusively for PlayStation 4.
