  • Norn9: Var Commons is one of the stronger romance novel entries on Switch. With a neat plot, no time to get bored with a suitor because there’s still plenty to go, and just enough hints to guess where the common ending will go, it'll be worth some time heading to meet The World.

  • Norn9: Var Commons’ Prologue is a bit rocky when introducing the narrative and suffers from several plot holes. However, it still manages to pull you in with its crazy plot twists and overall sci-fi presentation. This, combined with its clever tactic to tempt you into clearing every single route for each character, is possibly one of the most cleverly written stories I’ve seen thus far.

  • Norn9 is perhaps one of the less interesting in a recent burst of Visual Novels to hit the Vita, the story seems to take far too long to go anywhere and ends somewhat abruptly. The games main saviour however is the quirky Norn9 Quest mode, which was more interesting than the main games story.

  • What it comes down to, though, is that this isn’t the only otome game to come out in a relatively short period of time, and as such Norn9 in direct competition with Code: Realize for both attention and sales… and of the two, Norn9 is the inferior product. The title is by no means bad, but the character path shortcomings coupled with Aksys’s localization errors and typos makes it difficult to wholeheartedly recommend. It’s worth a purchase for an otome fan, as it’s a decent title of a genre that is severely limited in English, but the heavy focus on romance is not going to appeal to everyone.

  • The saving grace here is that it’s not particularly hard to get a good ending as it is with some visual novels. As such, you won’t need to waste excessive hours simply trying to perfect one route before moving onto the next. Norn9: Var Commons might not be the very best the otome genre has to offer, but it’s certainly up there.

  • Norn9: Var Commons blends its otome/dating sim elements and science fiction plot with a good deal of skill, turning out a visual novel that can be enjoyed by a broad audience. Its cast of characters is varied and likeable, and their explorations of their flaws call to mind the themes of recent superhero movies — specifically, the responsibilities of those who hold power.

  • It's the perfect time to pick this title up, with an anime adaptation in the works and due out soon. The Vita has become a perfect home for visual novel titles, and while Sony aren't showing much love to the forgotten handheld, thankfully publishers like Aksys and Atlas continue to bring over the best games out of Japan.
