  • Nioh's most invigorating and intimidating moments occur when you feel you're at equal footing with your opponent. And it's during these encounters that one careless move can result in your demise or the right string of thoughtful actions can make you feel invincible.

  • Despite these minor critiques, Nioh solidifies the status of roguelikes and their relevance in today’s gaming landscape. Never in my countless hours with the game did Nioh feel like the knock off Bloodborne it might look like at first glance. Instead it enhances and develops the genre in new and interesting ways, building and adding a fresh layer of varnish on a previously-established framework.

  • Nioh is among the finest exclusives to grace the PS4, melding samurai action with the framework of the well-renowned Dark Souls series, although its devilish difficulty may send William to an early grave.

  • The fluid combat works in tandem with the game’s RPG elements to envelop you into its violent world; a world in which you’ll die time and time again yet always return for more; your pride hanging in the balance until you emerge triumphant. With Nioh, Team Ninja has graced Sony’s PlayStation 4 console with a title that should be considered essential, and demonstrated that they still very much have a finger on the (Ki) pulse.

Nioh is a culmination of some of my favorite mechanics in video games. The incredibly fast paced, twitch based reflex combat of Ninja Gaiden. The meticulous strategy and sense of discovery of Souls and the loot/equipment upgrade system of Diablo. It’s as though this was a game made specifically for me. If that wasn’t enough, Nioh manages to become more than the sum of its parts as something truly exceptional with an identity of its own – one that I simply can’t put down and it has secured a spot as the top contender in my game of the year list thus far.

  • Laced with collectibles, empowered by an RNG-based loot system and unpredictable in its own right, Nioh is a solid contender to the  hardcore action-RPG throne that’s been held by From Software since the genre’s arguable inception. Team Ninja has proved the Souls-like is a genre with as much potential and variation as any other - if you’ve been tempted by this kind of game before, but had reservations about getting involved, Nioh is a beginner-friendly, fun-to-learn but hard-to-master essential for you. We recommend it highly.

  • Thoroughly addictive, extremely exhilarating, and most of all, a whole lot of fun, Nioh is probably the finest example of its genre, and perhaps one of the best games of this generation.

  • There is so much more I could talk about when it comes to Nioh, though a big part of the fun and experience of Nioh is discovering things on your own. But know this; Nioh is an incredible action RPG game that should not be missed. Offering well balanced and visceral combat, engaging environments to explore, challenging bosses and well over 80 hours of exciting content to enjoy.

  • There are clear inspirations taken from various games, and yet Nioh manages to do things a bit differently, and because of that, is able to stand on its own as a fun action game.

  • Because of its complexity, because of it’s myriad of interlocking systems, Nioh can be hard to pin down. More than anything, it feels like a flawed but promising first draft. Team Ninja has taken some big chances here. They don’t all pay off, but the ones that do pull together for a game that justifies some of the pain required.
