  • Ultimately, that excruciating difficulty and the feeling it evokes are baked into Nioh's DNA, though, and its boss fights remain compelling even as they vex and frustrate. Though it sometimes feels like a curse as you play, it is a testament that Nioh 2 successfully grabs and holds your complete attention so close for so long.

  • Nioh 2 is the kind of action game that's clearly targeted towards a certain type of gamer. It's an incredibly difficult game, and gamers that don't have the patience or commitment to learning its various intricacies just aren't going to get as much out of the game. However, fans of the original title and gamers that enjoy that kind of difficulty level will find that they will get out of Nioh 2 what they're willing to put into it.

  • Enemy and level reuse was a small problem, with inventory management and loot amount returning gremlins, but, for me at least, they weren't dealbreakers. Nioh 2's strength will always be in its combat and how each new encounter tests a player's skill. In that, at least, there is consistency.

  • Nioh 2 is an extremely well done sequel that adds enough to an already complex combat system, but not too much to make systems redundant or cumbersome. The changes aren’t drastic, and this may lead to some feeling like it feels too similar, but the first game already had fantastic gameplay variety. Nioh was one of my favorite Soulslike in 2017, and Nioh 2 continues that success and makes me wish other Soulslike’s would take note.

  • For a game with this much customization and depth to have all of its parts work so seamlessly together is a feat worthy of the highest praise. The only thing holding Nioh 2 back is the mediocre soundtrack and thin veneer of a story. I cannot wait to get lost in the DLC to come. Kudos to you, Team Ninja, for building intelligently on what you created in the first Nioh.

  • Doubly so if you never played the first game as many of the systems here build upon the foundation that game created. Even having played that game in 2017, I had a hard time grappling with some of the systems Nioh 2 threw at me — I can’t imagine how it would for a new player. However, for those that decide to leap into Nioh 2, it offers some of the best combat I have had the pleasure to play.

  • With Nioh 2, Team Ninja has deepened an already engaging experience, porting the excellent systems and gameplay from the first game and introducing even more toys, stats, moves and systems to master. Incredibly difficult but equally rewarding, Nioh 2 has brought Souls-like combat to new levels of complexity and nuance and while the influence of FromSoftware’s genre-defining games is still apparent, Nioh 2 has an identity all its own.

  • The curse of any Soulslike is that, sooner or later, it must face up to the fact that there is no such thing. With Nioh 2, Team Ninja has done a better job than anyone else at making smart innovations to a treasured design template, but you can’t innovate art, or the rolling fogs of sensation that envelop you when you’re in the company of something you can’t explain.

  • What made the first Nioh game great was that it had a fluid combat system, interesting enemies and bosses, great customization, and boatloads of loot to grind for. Three years later in its sequel, that still remains true. Team Ninja nailed the formula the first time and preserved it. They expanded upon other regions and strengthened the weaker aspects, delivering a full Nioh experience and then some.
