  • I really wanted to like this game – I honestly did. There are some genuinely terrifying and horrific elements in the game, but the performance issues, bugs, super long load times, and frustrating game mechanics just completely overrode any enjoyment or terror that I could get out of it. The game is also only available digitally, which is a bit of a downer if you like keeping a physical library as I do. If you’re dead set on trying this game, I’d honestly recommend the PC version over this. If not, I’d recommend checking out a fan translation of Clock Tower on Super Famicom or checking out the PS1 sequel if you can get it for a good price.

  • While I’m glad that there are developers still attempting to bring their games to the Vita, I’m beyond disappointed with NightCry. There aren’t many horror games for the system and this could have been an excellent addition to a library in need, but Vita owners deserve better than this. NightCry has some good ideas but the execution is nothing short of disastrous. It’s extremely glitchy and at times borderline unplayable.

  • It's a shame that there are so many fundamental gameplay issues, because NightCry really does have a lot of potential. There are definitely promising concepts with the plot, multiple endings, and unique horror gameplay elements, but it's all overshadowed by the bugginess of everything else. As one Steam reviewer eloquently put, "it needs more time in the oven."

  • The kills and creative deaths are actually very entertaining, and even the bizarre acting ends up working for the lack of budget. Maybe one day it can be salvaged into the cult hit people would love, since it is very clear that the ones behind NightCry really did care about what they were making. It is a shame that their vision is suffocating under the weight of so many technical flaws.

  • If you’re particularly interested in an old-fashioned horror title it might be exactly what you’re after. I certainly didn’t have a bad time with it, but it’s not something I can recommend unless you’re willing to put up with a massive amount of jank for an experience that definitely isn’t the best on the market.

  • NightCry is an incredible experience that's only held back by its extremely poor polish. The controls need a lot of work, especially when trying to escape, and overall, the presentation needed more work in some areas, like the character animations and environment. If willing to look past the cosmetic aspects, though, NightCry is a nightmare that won't be forgotten.

  • NightCry goes beyond the usual borders of broken games and into new nightmarish territory. I have frankly never played a game as rife with issues as this one. If ever there were a game that could be labelled "unplayable", NightCry is the game. Outside of not loading at all, I can't think of another way this game could fail. If NightCry were the last game on Earth, I would not play it. I mean that literally. It's that bad.

About the game

NightCry is set on a cruise ship, and you have been invited along for the cruise of a (possibly short) lifetime. While your surroundings are luxurious and the guests are friendly, not everything is as it should be. The guests and the crew start to turn up dead, the victims of some foul murderer.
