  • If you’ve read this far, you’re probably confused. There are several points above that make Nier Automata sound like a good game with a few design issues. I wish I could explain exactly what makes this game so damn special, but that would absolutely ruin it for you. Rest assured, if you love a great story told with devastating style, you need to play through Nier Automata several times. Don’t worry, it’ll be pretty clear when it’s actually over.

  • Nier: Automata never feels stale or boring thanks to director Yoko Toro's ability to find a way to keep things fresh through gameplay, presentation, and story. Everything about this JRPG is nothing short of gripping and mesmerizing, it's one of those generation-defining games where people will look back on it decades from now talking about it still filled with awe.

  • Yet at the end of the day, NieR: Automata was never defined by its technical issues. Instead, it’s a game that feels uniquely stylised by those that made it. In the same way that an Ingmar Bergman film feels unmistakably his, or how a Hideo Kojima game is filled with small, recognisable touchstones, NieR: Automata is a product of auteur game making at its finest.

  • NieR: Automata is nothing short of outstanding. Its storytelling is deep and engaging, its gameplay is in-depth and remarkably fluid, its design remains innovative throughout and its pacing is second to none. Rarely do we see such a high level of attention to detail in games of this type. Simply put, this is a near masterpiece that more than deserves your time and attention. It’s a truly sensational experience.

  • So as I sit here drinking the last of my fine lager, pondering the meaning of existence, I wholeheartedly recommend you pour yourself a glass of Nier Automata too. PlatinumGames has had many high points throughout its 11-year existence, but never has it delivered something quite as mesmerising as Nier Automata, an action-RPG to be truly savoured.

  • Automata is a remarkable game with an incredible amount of style, personality, and flair. Its tendency to repeat enemies, locations, and bosses can dampen your enjoyment, however, and the PC port isn’t great. Cutscenes are locked to 30fps, which make them look distractingly jerky.

  • Nier itself is important. It is, as far as I’m concerned, historically significant in terms of its design and the way in which it uses the framework of a videogame to tell an evolving story. If I had my way, every budding game developer would play this game to the point of acquiring endings A, B, C, D, and E before acquiescing to its final and alarmingly direct request.

  • At the very end of NieR: Automata I was asked if I wanted to delete my save data in exchange for coming to the rescue of some poor sap who’s totally stuck in the game. I took it a step further and deleted NieR: Automata from my hard drive. It was the perfect ending. It’s a weird game directed by a crazy man. It has flaws that drove me nuts, twists that surprised me, sections that frustrated me, and moments that had me cheering in excitement and delight. I don’t think I’d change a thing.

NieR: Automata is unlike anything I have ever played. This being my first full playthrough of a Yoko Taro game, makes me want to check out his other work even more. This game takes the medium and spins it on its head in a way only video games can do, and it is a marvel to experience. Go into it without spoilers, read everything and pay attention to what it says.

  • And what a game NieR: Automata is. This is one of the best single-player RPGs to ever embrace PC, delivering a long-lasting adventure that entertains with its exciting gameplay while piercing the senses with the story it has to tell. Arriving just days after its console version, it serves as an example that the PC platform hasn't been forgotten.
