NHL 18 will satisfy hockey fans; that goes without saying. Its real achievement though is in its design, which will seamlessly teach and assist a player who knows nothing about hockey. They’re likely to stick around too, because as it turns out, hockey is a blast in videogame form.

  • NHL 18 is a predictable step forward for Electronic Arts’ ongoing hockey series, but that’s not to say that that’s necessarily a bad thing. The gameplay feels familiar, yet revamped to address some of the issues fans have with previous iterations. While the implementation of three-on-three overtime hockey in the real-world NHL has lead to one of the more engaging modes in recent memory through Threes.

  • There's still a lot to love about NHL 18, even if the core on-ice experience has only seen minor tweaks. The new modes bring variety to the gameplay, with NHL Threes standing out as a fast-paced, fun way to play hockey.

  • NHL 18 introduces two major modes to its solid array of dated options. The near-revolutionary Expansion Draft takes center stage and needs to be incorporated by other sports games.

  • NHL 18 isn’t without its flaws. Be a Pro needs a complete overhaul, as does the entire commentary system outside of NHL Threes. Those are two tough pills to swallow when you consider that each year players are buying a new NHL game and getting the same subpar features as the year prior.

  • As fun as NHL Threes might be, it definitely is not reason enough on its own. If you missed a couple of incarnations and your last game is NHL 15 or even an earlier one, then I can recommend NHL 18 without hesitation, as it delivers the whole package in a modern style. Lastly, if you want to play online and are the competitive type, there is probably anyway no way around it.

Two minutes for holding! NHL 18 adds one cool mode but coasts the rest of the way.

  • So, in the middle year of EA’s much-ballyhooed three-year redevelopment of the NHL franchise, things are coming along nicely. New players will have to work to get up to speed, as much as the game tries to help them out, but hardcore puck nuts will find themselves going deep into overtime with this one. The almost overwhelming numbers of ways that the game can be played means that it’s one that will definitely keep you going way past the finals.

  • NHL 18 is a nice step forward for the NHL series. New modes and options like NHL Threes, 3-on-3 hockey in EASHL, or creating the 32nd franchise in the NHL are fun additions that give the series a serious shot in the arm. Some minor issues from previous games continue to crop up, and I wish the customization options were deeper, but overall NHL 18 is a must have for any hockey fan.
