- With solid mechanics, insane levels, and beautiful design, Nex Machina cements Housemarque as the king of twin-stick shooter development.
Jonathan Moore · Aug 15, 2017 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Nex Machina is best suited for any type of gamer with any level of familiarity with the twin stick shooter genre. A first timer to bullet hells would dive right in and become addicted right away, while a veteran will enjoy the harder to find challenges that exist in every level. For those of us in between, Nex Machina offers a soothing but exhilarating experience that is good for decompressing after a stressful day at the office or playing together with a bunch of friends. It’s a tribute to the classics with a twist, and it definitely needs to be in game libraries everywhere.
Heather Johnson Yu · Jul 09, 2017 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - As a long time fan or a newcomer to the genre, Nex Machina is great addition to the SHMUP games list. It hits all the right notes and offers a satisfying experience. Available on both PC and PS4, this is a game I would recommend for lovers of the genre or those interested in trying out a reimagining of the classic genre.
Matt Keith · Jul 03, 2017 Reviewed on PC, PS4Read full review - I have always been a massive fan of Super Stardust HD, but I never thought Housemarque would be able to reach those dizzying heights again. I was wrong. Nex Machina takes all that was good about SSHD and turns the dial up, making this game my new favorite Housemarque game and one that I urge each and every one of your to go out and buy. Be warned however, it’s going to make your thumbs sore.
John Whitehouse · Jun 30, 2017 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - For the voracious consumer, who sees games only as something to devour rather than savour, that mightn’t seem like particularly good value. Everyone else, however, should buckle up and settle in for a breathless modern arcade classic that delivers more thrills per minute than almost anything else out there.
Chris Schilling · Jun 29, 2017 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Immaculate level design, devilish enemy placement, and a steady but always punishing difficulty curve help Nex Machina stand head and shoulders above most competing shooters, not to mention the early arcade titles that inspired it, like Robotron: 2084. That’s meaningful, as Nex Machina was created in cooperation with Eugene Jarvis, one of the designers of that early classic game. Nex Machina is far deeper than first impressions might suggest, and can offer many hours of searing challenge, presuming you’re willing to face a little eye strain.
Matt Miller · Jun 28, 2017 Reviewed on PS4 - Nex Machina is quite simply one of the best games of 2017. It offers simple yet incredibly fun, fast-paced gameplay and it has immense style. Do not sleep on this game.
Cade Onder · Jun 27, 2017 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Despite its utterly insane difficulty curve, Nex Machina is a pure joy to play. It’s sharp, intense, responsive, and layered with overlapping systems and objectives. Eugene Jarvis’ arcade-perfect pedigree acts as the mortar that holds the game’s voxel-based worlds and perfectly polished mechanics together, and I don’t think it’s hyperbole to posit that might be the best twin-stick shooter of this console generation, regardless of what proceeds it.
Ramin Ostad · Jun 24, 2017 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Despite the frustrations its upgrade system often caused me, I had a good time navigating Nex Machina’s array of twin-stick shooter challenges. The appealing art, energetic soundtrack, and pixel-perfect gamepad controls made me own every failure and look forward to whatever might come next. Arena mode seems to be where most of the lifespan on this one will come from, and I look forward to seeing people who are better than me at it pull off some crazy runs to climb the rankings. Nex Machina is not for the faint of heart, but a recipe to delight those looking for an attractive, arcadey challenge to overcome.
T.J · Jun 23, 2017 Reviewed on PC, PS4Read full review - Nex Machina has no interest in wasting your time, and with the variety of difficulty levels it has a lot of meat to offer to anyone remotely interested. Mechanically simple and yet satisfyingly difficult, a quick game can easily turn into hours of robot crushing, adrenaline pumping action.
