  • After all of the changes, all of the updates, and all of the reworks of the last ten years, Neverwinter really hasn’t changed all that much. Cryptic Studios has consistently added new content, and although they seem to struggle with the new player experience, most of their attempts to streamline character progression and game mechanics have come off decently, especially in the UI department. They continue to leverage the strength of the Forgotten Realms campaign setting to keep players coming back for more adventures. Although I don’t ever see Neverwinter rivaling the giants of the MMORPG genre, I don’t see it fading away into the sunset any time soon.

  • Overall, it’s hard to argue that Neverwinter on PS4 is anything other than a great deal. You get every campaign and content addition since 2013 without needing to pay a cent. Cryptic has regularly impressed with their additions, so to get these for free feels extremely generous, and it’s hard to begrudge them for upselling you on the Zen Market.

  • It’s extremely mindless grinding, which can be fun now and again when you’re feeling non-committal. And from what I’ve learned of the endgame offerings, when you’re fully leveled, you can just experience much of the same. I’m not sure how long someone would want to experience more of the same, and I don’t feel like anything I’ve played warrants going through it all again with another character. It’s just not all that compelling, but if you have friends you’d like to quest with, it’s certainly something to do… like many other things.

  • For some people, the heavier focus on keeping the pace of the game moving will be enough. Heck, the player can be on a mount less than an hour after starting, which goes miles beyond what the competition does, and that alone goes a long way to make for a speedier, but still rewarding experience. While there are plenty of opportunities to purchase things with real world cash, it’s never required. This alone makes me willing to throw in more, just to look shiny in a game that has me addicted.

  • So, ultimately, Neverwinter is strongly recommended for RPG fans, and even more so for MMORPG fans. There are a couple of hiccups from a technical standpoint, and the controls aren’t perfect. Graphically, we’ve all seen better, as well. But there is a whole world of Dungeons & Dragons-inspired adventuring to be had in Neverwinter, and you can see as much or as little of it with friends as you so desire.

  • A very generous, but slightly broken MMORPG that can't quite stand on the shoulders of the PC-based giants. It does, however, prove that the genre's systems can translate onto consoles intact.

  • Lose yourself in its trance, and it achieves and maintains a level of addictiveness that flags all too soon in other free-to-play MMORPGs like TERA: Rising. In a genre that's increasingly overcrowded, Neverwinter manages to establish itself as a game that's never fully boring, never too eager to rifle your pockets, and, well, never quite fun enough to stick around in for too long.

  • In a year without high-profile, high-quality MMOs, Neverwinter is the best so far. We’ll see if it can maintain that title against Final Fantasy XIV.

  • This is yesterday’s MMO by the merits of its own content, but compensates by potentially ushering in a DIY revolution.

  • You could say the same about Neverwinter in general, actually: there just isn't much substance here. After 40 hours or so, you've traveled the howling corridors of The Chasm, battled across Rothe Valley's autumnal meadows, and fought winter wolves atop Icespire Peak. It's a shame that the journey doesn't leave you more epic tales to tell.
