  • Neva’s immaculate presentation, enjoyable action, and moving narrative prop it up among 2024’s best indies. Despite boasting thrilling cinematic sequences and jaw-dropping visuals, Neva’s best moments are often its smallest: watching a relieved Alba call her furry friend after a brutal fight to share an affectionate and appreciative embrace.

  • Neva cements Nomada Studio as a master of color and art design, with phenomenal visuals and animations that make the powerful, emotional narrative even more impactful. Neva also dramatically improves gameplay versus GRIS with satisfying combat and platforming. My only major grip is that the journey is simply over too soon.

  • The themes here are painted with a broad brush, but their refusal to get down to specifics doesn’t mean that they don’t still ring true. The game bittersweetly fixates on parenthood, as you watch Neva herself grow and outpace Alba as the seasons pass, and on the destruction of the natural world, which in turn makes it more hostile and violent. And then there’s the connective thread between the two—that even when it feels like everything is falling apart, because sometimes it literally is, the only thing you can do is keep moving.

  • Neva is another great game from Nomada Studios, managing to take the formula of Gris and add in new gameplay elements, a beautiful art style, and a story and characters to match. When the main complaint is you wish it were longer, you know you’re onto a great game.

  • Neva is a great looking game that provides a few hours of joy from simply being immersed in its world. The gameplay, story, and pacing are a bit more subdued, however.

  • Neva is almost brilliant. This is a finely crafted game let down by too much empty time-wasting, untapped potential in its puzzling, and a rather onerous desire to make people cry.

  • If you’re a lifelong pet owner like myself, Neva has the potential to hit you like a train, but it’s also a universal enough feeling to work for anyone. The combat is a great addition to the video game aspect that definitely filled in a hole for me in the experience. Nomada Studio continues their penchant for making gorgeous games that are packed with emotional resonance. Now that they’ve told game stories about parents and pets, we’ll see how they can make us all cry next.

  • With Neva, Nomada Studio continues to display an unmatched level of craft as they create yet another visually striking and evocative fantasy world. But in bending it to fit new systems and more direct storytelling, Neva struggles to define itself beyond raw beauty and uneven, all too familiar thematic ground.

  • Neva is a solid video game, but a true masterpiece if we look at it as an art piece. As is often the case, the whole is far greater than the sum of its parts. The adventures of Alba and Neva are incredibly memorable, leaving you eager to relive them immediately after you finished a playthrough, just to bask in the beauty of its stunning scenes. While it’s not a game for those seeking adrenaline, it’s a beautifully crafted tale that forges an emotional connection with anyone patient enough to let the story unfold. For indie fans, Neva is a must-play—an experience that should not be missed.

    About the game

Neva is an emotionally-charged action adventure from the visionary team behind the critically acclaimed GRIS. Neva chronicles the story of Alba, a young woman bound to a curious wolf cub following a traumatic encounter with dark forces. Together they embark on a perilous journey through a once-beautiful world as it slowly decays around them. Over time, their relationship will evolve as they learn to work together, helping one another to brave increasingly dangerous situations. The wolf will grow from a rebellious cub to an imposing adult seeking to forge his own identity, testing Alba’s love and their commitment to one another. As the cursed world threatens to overwhelm them, Alba and her courageous companion will do whatever it takes to survive and make a new home, together.
