Ultimately, Need for Speed: Heat is a decent racer. In fact, I would say it is a great playing one. It’s just missing something new. Since Most Wanted on the 360, the formula hasn’t changed much. Payback tried to, but never really came into its own. Heat has everything that is needed to make a fun racing game, and it does so very well. Maybe I’m just looking for something and don’t really know what it is. I enjoyed my time with Heat and I’m sure other arcade racing fans will too. It’s a solid game that plays and looks great, even with the little grind that may come along with it.

  • Overall Need for Speed Heat was a fully enjoyable game with many features that help keep the game from getting stale or boring. With the ability to use Studio App to design cars on your mobile and import into the game, customizing your in-game character you can make adjustments for hours. I would highly recommend NFSH to anyone that loves a good street racer game that just wants to get a nice ride and have fun.

  • Need for Speed: Heat is a much better game than I thought it could possibly be. It’s not the most original, but its return-to-basics strategy is just what the franchise needed. Car customization and tuning is in-depth yet simple, the day/night cycle fun to work with, and the story is entertaining if generic. I don’t know if this formula will survive another game, but it’s certainly the best template to work with that Need for Speed has seen in over a decade.

  • Compared to its obvious role models, it doesn’t ramble all over the place but has a grateful focus to it. The game comfortably speeds along a yellow brick road that goes neatly between calculated appeal of Forza Horizon and the excess abundance of The Crew, and that’s why I liked it better than those two. In fact, I’m afraid that NFS Heat kind of spoils its genre. I need games with a human touch and after this, racing games without this much personality just won’t do anymore.

  • Need for Speed: Heat may not be as jam-packed with options or refined as the Forza Horizon series, but Ghost Games still provides an enjoyable experience for fans of street racing. The world is beautiful, the soundtrack fits the South Florida theme, and there are endless customization options. More importantly, the game is smooth and only featured one technical error. Need for Speed: Heat may not be changing the racing genre, but early experiences make it appear to be a solid return for the series, although finding other racers in the online mode may be fairly difficult.

  • Need for Speed Heat ditching its predecessor’s heavy-handed microtransactions and live-service nonsense is commendable, but in most other ways, this is actually a step back for the series. The game provides some solid arcade thrills, but a limited map, so-so visuals, slapdash action, and irritating cops weigh the experience down. If you’re desperate for a new open-world racer, Need for Speed Heat may be worth a spin, but most will want to wait until this one hits the used car lot.

  • Looking at the bigger picture, NFS Heat is a small win for a franchise that has lost its way for years and is slowly getting its stride back. Heat plays it a little too safe, so it'll be interesting to see if the series builds on this progress with a bolder next entry to deliver a great experience instead of a decent one.

  • For years, Need for Speed has felt like a burnout, a franchise stumbling in the dark searching for a sense of purpose through an entire lazy generation. Since there seems to be no end in sight despite this, here’s hoping that Need for Speed is radically retooled when it is inevitably dragged out once again in the next few years. But if Heat is any indication, it’ll be almost better left to rot in a junkyard.

  • If you're a fan of the franchise and felt betrayed by Payback in 2017, then Need for Speed Heat is worth your time. With a packed roster of over 120 cars, a well-designed and gorgeous city to explore and race in, and a huge emphasis on customization, it's undeniably Ghost Games' apology letter for 2017's mess of a game.

  • Though it still can't match the scope of Forza Horizon 4, Need for Speed: Heat is a great racing game in its own right.
