- In the end, NBA 2K24 might be the finest sports videogame I’ve ever resented. The butter-smooth gameplay, extensive core modes, and pristine visuals will deliver months upon months of top-tier digital hoops, which is reflected in the final score. However, those interested in character and team advancement will likely find the reliance on microtransactions to be too demanding and expensive to realistically pursue.
Brad Bortone · Nov 28, 2023 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - NBA 2K24 is another installment in the annals of sports game history. In the moments that it works, it works well. But it’s not welcoming for newcomers, and the insipid practice of MTX is about as subtle as a ball to the face.
Greg Hicks · Oct 08, 2023 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - It’s a real shame that the reputation of this franchise has evolved over the last 5 years from the standard of the best of what sports games can offer to a shining example of its worst excesses. Comparing this game to MLB The Show, another game that offers microtransactions, only increases how egregiously 2K exploits players through rigging everything from the on-court gameplay to traversal from quest to quest to encourage additional spending despite already having collected the cost of a full priced game up front (plus that sweet State Farm money).
Ryan · Sep 25, 2023 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - NBA 2K24 continues to dominate the paint when it comes to mainstream success. It also looks to dominate the wallets of fans each year. The game is undoubtedly fun to play along with its great gameplay and graphics, but the gutting of MyCAREER and increased incorporation of virtual currency does leave a bad taste at times.
Michael Chow · Sep 22, 2023 Reviewed onRead full review - I shouldn't have to talk about money this much in a basketball game. But in this series, it's become unavoidable. NBA 2K24 feels like a game made by details-obsessed basketball experts unfortunately hamstrung by bottom-line-obsessed executives.
Mark Delaney · Sep 20, 2023 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - It still looks impressive and has great controls, but it is also plastered with convoluted menus and a ridiculous amount of ads and microtransactions. What can I even add at this point which hasn’t been said in my previous five reviews of NBA 2K iterations? It’s good as an arcade experience, it’s frustrating elsewhere, and you know for a fact nothing will change because there is no need to innovate when you don’t have to deal with competitors.
Leo Faria · Sep 20, 2023 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - NBA 2K24 delivers the most authentic on-court gameplay in the series’ history thanks to the new ProPLAY technology. Gameplay feels less scripted, animations feel less canned, and modern players perform closer to their real counterparts than ever before. Some modes and features still feel largely untouched from years past, while MyCAREER caters to veteran and pay-to-win players, but I guess we can’t have it all.
Jason Dailey · Sep 19, 2023 Reviewed on PC, PS5, Series X|S, PS4, XB1Read full review - NBA 2K24 introduces a revolutionary gameplay technology to bring a completely natural on-court experience. However, microtransactions have gotten out of hand and could potentially damage the franchise soon.
Junior Onunkwo · Sep 19, 2023 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - NBA 2K24's lack of meaningful updates and continued overwhelming presence of microtransactions make it feel like it’s going through the motions and doesn’t have anything to say.
Matt Bianucci · Sep 19, 2023 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - NBA 2K24 doesn’t feel like the work of a team that’s hungry as a majority of the game’s modes and features aren’t much of a step up over last year. It’s a shame, because the on-court action, brought to new life by innovative ProPlay animation tech, is more accomplished than ever and MyCareer actually makes some welcome changes amid all the microtransactions. NBA 2K24 delivers plenty of polished roundball fun, but some of the choices the game’s developers made following last year’s excellent entry make me question their coaching.
