  • In the end, Natsuki Chronicles is a solid shoot-'em-up. The action provides a nice balance between hardcore and novice-friendly gameplay, while the various tweakable options are welcome for players of all skill levels. Despite a lack of modes, there is some replayability thanks to an online leaderboard system and various difficulty levels and items to unlock; it gives players a reason to return despite the lackluster story.

  • Natsuki Chronicles is a perfect game for those who love the older Gradius and R-Type games or even have played Ginga Force. The production quality is really high thanks to the lovely sound, music, amazing graphics and attention to detail. The gameplay itself is fluid, easy to pick up, hard to master, yet has a safety net in place so you have more chances each run that you (re)try.

  • Natsuki Chronicles accommodates newcomers and veterans of the genre without diluting the experience for either. The tight, challenging gameplay and great presentation provide a game that’s well worth playing. Admittedly, the difficulty may be off-putting to some, especially with the occasional difficulty spike.

  • This game isn’t easy either and will require a ton of play-throughs of the same level, especially the later ones and on higher difficulties, to best determine which weapon types work the best and also your strategy. But even so, fans of the bullet hell genre should most definitely add this game to their library.

  • The game has a refinement to it that eases any pain points someone might have had with other titles in the genre. The accessibility of the systems and constant rewards creates a challenging but approachable experience. The only setback is a few hard-to-spot enemies and a frame drops, but you’ll probably be having too much fun to notice.

  • Despite a very distracting story mixed with equally distracting visuals, the game is a real fun time with plenty of unlocks to keep the replay value high.

  • Unoriginal art direction aside, Natsuki Chronicles is a thoroughly entertaining shoot ’em up that any fan of the genre should check out. Though thanks to its generosity with handing out additional credits and shields in each of its game modes, it’s even suitable for those with only a passing interest in the genre looking for a good entry point.

  • Natsuki Chronicles is one of the more enjoyable bullet-hell shooters I’ve played in quite some time. It nails the addictive nature of the classic arcade titles, and wraps it up in some gorgeous visuals and excellent level design. While these games are hard by nature, I did feel that Qute took it a tad too far here, with even the Easy setting proving to be rock solid. But those with time and patience on their hands will get no doubt have a great time here, and even if I suck at it, Natsuki Chronicles will be popping up on my playlist for sometime yet.

  • Thanks to many quality-of-life features, including bullet display options and "stage study" unlocks, it's unlikely you'll ever become truly discouraged. What's more, the game is interesting, creative, and reliable, even if its story gets lost in the shuffle and its visuals suffer from some run-of-the-mill designs. Give this one a try.

  • In the modern era, only the exceptional Rolling Gunner runs it close in the hori stakes – but even that Switch belter lacked such a comprehensive, compulsive story mode and depth of unlockables and replayability. This comes highly recommended.
