  • Monument Valley 2 is a unique singleplayer puzzle game that builds on the success of the first Monument Valley game by indie developer ustwo.

  • So as a game, I have my criticisms of Monument Valley 2, and it's kind of why while I understand why review scores are such a useful shorthand, they are imperfect for something like the Monument Valley games. If you want a puzzle game that will test you, this isn't for you. If you just want something that you can interact with in order to get rewarded with interesting themes and gorgeous artwork, Monument Valley 2 succeeds at that. But if Ustwo ever explores this world again, I think there's a gap between the gameplay and the art that could be crossed to make this the masterful experience these games have just barely fallen short of being in my eyes.

  • Much like an actual monument, Monument Valley was (and still is) an important landmark in mobile gaming. Monument Valley 2 seems to iterate on the things that made Monument Valley so beloved, but in doing so it feels like a duplication of effort–like a monument to a monument. It's still pretty and easy to recommend, but feels far less special.

  • As with Monument Valley, which, in its brevity, kept me in a haze for a fortnight after I finally set it down, Monument Valley 2 lingers in my mind. Its cursory existence has me craving more and I can't help but feel a ting of disappointment that this is all there is. It's a beautifully brief journey, but ustwo's reluctance to fully explore its possibilities only hampers its potential.

  • The story is mostly wordless, but the powerful themes of growth and change are much easier to understand this time around. I was genuinely moved by these characters’ mesmerizing adventure through a series of environments that challenge our own understanding of how the world works. Monument Valley 2 might be a short adventure, but it’s a fresh change of pace from the sprawling open-world giants that have dominated the rest of the year.

  • Monument Valley 2 successfully replicates the original's charm and vibrancy. Its sense of how a touch game can transport minds to unfamiliar terrains is uncanny. Certainly, it's one of the most accomplished low-intensity mobile puzzle games ever made. Frustratingly, it falls away just at the point when it might have scaled greater heights.

  • If we gave subgrades for things like presentation and storytelling, Monument Valley 2 would get a perfect score and then some. It’s that good in those areas. It just falls a tad short of perfect in terms of an overall score because it is so short. Maybe the best way to sum it up is like this: as a work of art, it’s nearly unparalleled — but as a game, it’s just a bit less.

  • I bought Monument Valley 2 yesterday as soon as I noticed that it was on the App Store during the WWDC keynote, and I have had a hard time putting it down once I get started. I have gone through about eight levels so far, so I’m not sure how many total stages there are, but I’m loving the added mechanic of controlling two characters to solve the puzzles. The visuals are breathtaking like the original, but with much more vibrant tones. The soundtrack is engrossing and adds to the experience, and the controls are easy enough for anyone. The original Monument Valley was a monumental experience for me, and this sequel only reinforces that.

  • Monument Valley 2 is a sleek puzzler, with an ethereal soundtrack underpinning the zen charm of vibrant worlds and intelligent level design. Though the plot can’t quite decide whether or not it wants to make itself known, and the existential element feels slightly tacked on, the mechanics and mind-bending optical illusions make for a relatively pleasant return trip.

  • A truly gorgeous experience that lives up to the reputation of its predecessor - shame it's over far too quickly.
