  • Monster Monpiece was always a bit of an odd duck in the landscape of the Vita (even if it did fit in with numerous other games asking its players to “interface” directly with anime ladies). It was a card battler meets visual novel though it doesn’t stand out in either genre really. It is a pleasant distraction at best, but ultimately lacks the depth of execution in any one of those areas to get a hearty recommendation.

  • Monster Monpiece tends to split its limited visual and gameplay assets too far between card battler, visual novel and groping simulator, and this is why it doesn’t quite manage to be a classic of any of these genres. Nonetheless, Monster Monpiece really shocked me with how much fun it was, and how much drew me into creating the perfect deck of monstrous ladies to do battle with. If you’re looking for a fun card battler carried along by a beautifully presented story then Monster Monpiece will appeal to you – as well as your walrus creature!

  • Monster Monpiece is a fun and challenging game, and if you're a fan of card battling then this one is a must for you. The only thing that stops this one from scoring higher is the time consuming rubbing feature to upgrade cards and frame rate issues.

  • It’s an excellent addition to the niche library that has made its home on the Vita, and for $29.99, it’s an intriguing card battler you won’t find anywhere else. Ignore the taboos and give it a shot, especially if you’re looking for something a little different than a dungeon crawler or traditional role-playing game. It’ll thrill you, chill you, and fulfill you, creature of the night.

  • Simply put, Monster Monpiece is a game that doesn’t really need to go to the extremes that it does. With a dull narrative, stereotypical characters, and game-breaking bugs, its only saving grace is the surprisingly strong card game at its core — although even then, it wasn’t long before we began to tire of that, too. Ultimately, if it weren’t for the inclusion of the absurd leveling up minigame, no one would pay this mediocre title much heed at all.

  • Replayability is very high as there are hundreds of different types of cards to collect that can all be modified to help create the perfect deck for you, providing a highly valuable experience that many people would be able to enjoy. Monster Monpiece comes well recommended. Just don't overthink the "rubbing" system, and you'll be fine.

I certainly can't find significant fault in the core concept at the heart of Monster Monpiece's gameplay, other than that it doesn't tap into its full potential. It's just a shame that everything around it isn't up to snuff.

  • It’s like when we all found out that Skyward Sword forced motion controls on its players; sure, the game was still good, but not as good as it could have been. Regardless, if you can get past the inherent creepiness that permeates Monster Monpiece on a number of levels, then there’s no denying that this is an intelligent, fulfilling card game.

  • Monster Monpiece has a couple of interesting takes on the digital CCG genre, but it's completely hampered by the horrendous controls and its tasteless and aggravating upgrade system. There's understandably some issues with porting a title that utilised a touchscreen for many in-game actions, but the hybrid mouse/keyboard setup feels awful, and the deckbuilding interface is so clunky that it's pure trial and error to navigate the first few times. With so many amazing digital CCGs out there, there's few good reasons to play this one.

  • Still, for all of its fan service, flat art style, and one-dimensional characters, Monster Monpiece is still worth checking out if you're craving a deep, nontraditional card battler.
