Fans of the series shouldn’t hesitate picking this up, while newcomers will have a much easier time figuring out how to play. Without a doubt, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is the best game in the series so far. I highly suggest it to 3DS owners looking for a complex series that can last them well over 100 hours. There’s nothing else like it on the system.

  • New monsters to persue and defeat, coupled with new weapon classes make for a worthwhile experience for fans of Monster Hunter. Those who might be on the fence and already own the previous Monster Hunter outing on the 3DS, will be drawn in by the ability to take your hunter on adventures online for the first time on a handheld. A truly ‘ultimate’ experience for fans of the Monster Hunter series.

  • The addition of multiplayer online to the 3DS is important, but it's hard to comment on something that should have been standard last time and shows up just now. The graphics are miserably unimproved from 2012's Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, and the 3D element, while pretty, makes it hard to read much of the game's text. Likewise, it's a game about long boss fights, and doing some of the epic 30 to 45 minute battles on a tiny handheld make you think the choice of platform isn't ideal.

  • Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is a culmination of the series as a whole, noting all that made past entries great, while building upon them to craft something new, cohesive, and greater than the already fantastic sum of its parts. Perhaps the greatest complaint that could be levied towards the title is that it may prove impossible to meet the expectations that this game shall set for its sequel. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is a game that simply cannot be missed.

  • ...Sometimes. Even after practicing with the equipment, I feel the need to forge my own sword and chop at my system. But if you can handle the constant exertion meter management, sharpen/recharge/reload your weapon while surrounded, and chase those damn beasts down on foot alone or with friends, you should be able to weather the storm of Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate. It’s an easy entry into the series, but be warned: It’s not easy in any other fashion.

  • Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is not only the best portable entry in the series, but quite possibly the best installment, period. With its user-friendly approach coupled with a solid online experience, brilliant new mechanics, even more intimidating monsters, and impressive environments, this is one of the better games to grace the 3DS handheld.

  • As for the game itself, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is a great addition to the series thanks to its impressive combat mechanics, its highly-detailed and locales, and its ability to be challenging, but not impossible to beat. Even though it still has some aspects I thought could be improved, it's still a game that I ended up enjoying way more than I initially thought I would.

  • Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is exactly what fans of the series will expect it to be. If you have played, and loved, other Monster Hunter games before this one, stop reading reviews and just go buy it. You will love it. If this is your first Monster Hunter game I definitely recommend picking it up. There are really no games to compare it to, as the Monster Hunter series is entirely its own creation.

  • Chances are, if you're a long time Monster Hunter fan, you'll undoubtedly be happy with what Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate has to offer. Nearly endless replay value with crazy amount of customization, fantastic combat that the series is known for, and some fantastically giant and terrifying monsters to go up against.

  • Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is simply the most approachable and playable version of Capcom's action-RPG to date—but be warned, it still requires a hefty investment. If you're willing to take the leap, though, you'll soon understand why Monster Hunter has become such a phenomenon.

About the game

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate will take players to new heights, literally, with the introduction of more vertical and lateral movement than ever. An expanded repertoire of actions will create more dynamic hunting experiences with fluid climbing motions and the ability to jump attack from walls or ledges. In addition, players will be able to ride atop a monster for a limited time as they hang on and deliver attacks. With the addition of two new weapon classes, challenging new monsters and numerous locales, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate will be the most robust hunting experience yet.
