  • It offers depth of gameplay and customization in a gorgeous, immersive baseball experience. As other sports games have taken risks and made dramatic changes to their foundation, however, The Show has kept their formula mostly unchanged while doubling down on the core experience. It’s a safe choice that pays dividends to dedicated fans and hopefully opens the door to new ones.

  • What's most important, though, is that regardless of your level of experience with a real-life diamond, MLB 13: The Show looks good enough, plays well enough, and offers enough customization to please any sports or simulation fan. In fact, if I were a kid today, playing this might have given me the baseball bug that somehow eluded me in my younger years. It's the rare sports sim that manages to succeed on its own as a video game, something that even a non-fan can enjoy getting lost in.

  • MLB 13 The Show is the new apex of a perennially terrific sports series. It doesn't matter that nothing here is a staggering innovation; Sony San Diego has built the MLB The Show franchise into a paragon of annual refinement. MLB 13 is remarkable in that it is almost uniformly excellent. Annual sports games consist of numerous discrete pieces, but they rarely come together as well as they do here.

  • MLB 13: The Show turns the bats loose and finds stability online, but the numbers reflect MLB’s juiced era more than the pitcher-friendly league we see today. This year’s game is about making contact more consistently and shoring up the other aspects of a well-rounded baseball sim.

  • MLB 13: The Show can be tailored to emphasize whatever you like most about baseball. If you're a statistician, there are countless graphs and plenty of data to mine. Sluggers can swing to their hearts' content, laying the burden of pitching entirely on the CPU – or vice versa. However you want to play, whatever you want to play – it's all been accounted for with exceptional care.

  • MLB 13: The Show might lack the courage to swing for the fences, but it’s entertaining and solid sports simulation. Some of the new features are questionable, such as the throwing meter, while others, like the postseason mode, aren't fleshed out enough to make MLB 13 an instant purchase for those who are content with previous versions. Yet while there really aren't any new modes or "wow" features to make MLB 13 a completely different ballgame from previous entries, the gameplay, customization, computer AI, and visuals are too strong to ignore for even the most jaded fan.

  • MLB 13: The Show takes its place in the long line of stellar baseball games that the franchise has produced over the past eight years. It isn't a huge leap over last year's game, which admittedly wasn't a huge leap over its predecessor, but the alterations to the hitting and pitching models make for a much more satisfying game that opens The Show up to a much wider audience. While the game remains challenging, the frustration factor of hitting has been dialed way back, which will draw in new players who want to get good wood on the ball like a real big leaguer.

  • This being said, the core game remains by in large unchanged and some may question whether Sony brought enough to the table. Personally I felt like they have, but I also feel there is even more room to grow. Regardless, there is no question MLB The Show 13 is more than just a roster update and is about as good as it gets when it comes to baseball games on your PS3.

  • MLB 13: The Show delivers a clutch single to win the game and the title of most accurate sports franchise. The attention to detail delivered in every aspect of the game is to be commended. The game features smart tweaks to returning features and the addition of solid new modes. The beginner mode is perhaps the smartest move made and should invite plenty of new fans to the game. If you are looking for the closest thing to a pure baseball experience without leaving your home or turning on your cable, then MLB 13: The Show is made for you.

  • Graphically, it looks a bit less detailed from last year’s portable version, but menus, loading, and gameplay are much smoother. San Diego Studios is still learning how to properly utilize Sony’s handheld, but it’s well on its way.
