  • Nostalgic pangs will draw you toward the pixelated allure in Mighty Gunvolt, but the harsh reality is that your time is better spent elsewhere. More of an apéritif, this won’t be seen as Inti Creates’ finest hour.

  • Perhaps most of all, Mighty Gunvolt captures the charm and simplicity of countless B-tier NES games. Even its debut — it came out of nowhere! — hearkens back to the pre-Internet days when being surprised by quality games was still possible. It's no masterpiece, but a great deal of care clearly went into Mighty Gunvolt's creation. It's one of the best bite-sized 3DS downloadable titles to date, and loads of fun for fans of classic games.

  • Mighty Gunvolt is an excellent freebie for early adopters of Azure Striker Gunvolt, and will be worth its five dollar asking price upon its final release as well. It combines the classic 8-bit Mega Man style gameplay with a whole new setting and environment, and should satisfy anyone with a desire for something new within that sub-genre. It plays smoothly and controls well, and makes each of the three characters fun to use.

  • As a standalone game, Mighty Gunvolt would feel a tad unfinished. Although all three characters are compelling enough to star in their own platformer, the distinct lack of worlds and exposition won't keep you invested very long. But as a free extra for Azure Striker Gunvolt, Mighty is a great gift to fans, and an even greater teaser to hold people over for what's to come in Mighty No. 9.

It's an experience more than a full-fledged game, a taste of what Inti Creates is capable of when they strip everything away and go back to the 8-bit style and aesthetic they proved to know so much about when creating Mega Man 9 and 10.

  • There's a solid game behind Mighty Gunvolt, but it's over as soon as it gets going. With a lack of difficulty, a dearth of originality, and a criminally short running time, fans are far better off sticking with the characters' original games.

About the game

From the 8-bit generation. For the 8-bit generation! This game is reminiscent of the 80s, not just in looks, but also with simple controls that create a surprising amount of complexity and fun. Accompanying Gunvolt in this adventure are the angel Ekoro from Gal?Gun and Beck from Mighty Number 9. Each character possesses different skills that will force the player to finish each stage in different and creative ways.
