  • Metrico is an interesting game with some cool ideas in it. The puzzles are well designed, but control is poorly implemented into them. The whole idea of just walking into a segment and fiddling about for a bit soon becomes tiring, as working out the fundamentals before you even start on the actual puzzle devolves into trial and error. On a number of occasions I just didn’t work out what metric the game was tracking for a while, meaning I was stuck just flailing my Vita around and attempting every interaction.

  • Metrico is a visual and auditory delight: a sumptuous treat of a game with presentation that consistently impresses. However, a short running time, combined with occasionally shonky controls and a slightly frustrating central premise means that its gameplay never really lives up to its grand graphical grace.

  • The concept of using metrics based on your character’s own movements to manipulate a living infographic that you need to platform on is one that sounds great in design, but the execution of said concept needs to be tweaked before I could recommend that anyone spend much time with Metrico. Sadly, it does feel like you’re just bringing work home with you.

  • That aside, Metrico is a interesting puzzle game, albeit one that can sometimes feel like it's down to trial and error: a lot of times you'll have to show your working out. Still, it's free right now on PS Plus, and is definitely worth checking out.

You can look at Metrico through two different lenses: the premise (and promise) of a puzzle game built for the PlayStation Vita, which is excellent, and the execution, which isn’t. To say that Metrico is novel is an understatement.

  • Metrico looks and sounds the part of a critical darling, but laborious controls and empty narrative agency mar this chromatic trip. The many mechanics introduced from world to world often enrich the multiple puzzles you encounter, and the joy that comes from cracking the game's most complex codes is sublime. However, the erratic sensitivity of the Vita's motion control and overly indistinct theme hold Metrico back from being more than a fleeting curiosity.

  • While I love that Metrico doesn't hold your hand, there were times when I felt I could have used a bit more to hang on to - especially the levels where some of the on-screen "hints" are actually obfuscating the true course of action. However, for every moment of frustration, there were greater feelings of pride and the thrill of discovery.

  • I've never felt as beaten with the Goldblum Conundrum in a game as I did with Metrico. It does so much so right so quickly in the beginning that its subsequent avalanche of inputs felt like the worst kind of betrayal.

  • So Metrico is a clever, stylish game but one which is complex in its systems and difficult to adequately describe in words, or even demonstrate with video. It’s a very sensible choice to offer a demo on the store and probably even more so to enter into a deal with Sony that sees it appear as a free download to PlayStation Plus subscribers in August.

  • Sadly, a series of gimmicky mechanics find a way to not only destroy any sense of immersion, but also manage to turn a fun game into somewhat of a chore. When it sticks to its best features, Metrico is a stupendous experience. When it pushes the envelope, it’s far too obtuse to enjoy.

About the game

Metrico centers around infographics. It’s an atmospheric puzzle action game that strives to create a unique mindset of its own. The idea was born a few years ago out of noticing how beautiful infographics can look as an art form. It was reinforced by seeing that infographics have become increasingly important in contemporary pop-culture. While they haven’t made their way to videogames yet, Digital Dreams feels it’s a place where they can work exceptionally well. This is not just because of their pretty aesthetics as much as it is about actively changing data and how that can be visualized.
