- Thankfully, Ralph Waldo Emerson's adage, “It’s not the destination, it’s the journey,” thoroughly applies here. When I think back on my time with Studio Zero’s latest creation, the final chapters won’t be what stands out to me, but rather the heartfelt scenes shared with my party members or the awe-inspiring destinations that served as excuses to forge deeper bonds with the characters. Similarly, I won’t dwell on the frustration and despair I felt facing off against the final boss; instead, I’ll reminisce on the menacing and believable nature of that character in the long build-up to that moment. Despite the overly drawn-out final act and the poorly tuned final boss, Metaphor: ReFantazio’s journey is well worth embarking upon.
Nikola Nick Jovanovic · Nov 25, 2024 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Metaphor: ReFantazio is a superb JRPG. Studio Zero’s debut effort maintains the velocity of Atlus’ past two decades of work. It is not a reskin of Persona nor an embellishment of established concepts. Familiar mechanical beats exist but are captured in a unique world and, better yet, an original IP which feels increasingly rare. While it may only be for a brief moment, it feels like a saving grace we are allowed to step foot in this fantasy merely to temporarily escape from a reality that often seems so bleak.
BEN SHEENE · Nov 15, 2024 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Metaphor feels like an evolution of both the Persona and SMT series in the best ways. It builds on what’s come before in both, and synergizes everything together in a cohesive package. It also boasts some of the best gameplay found in any turn-based JRPG, with style to spare. While its world is beautiful and the cast lovable, it sadly never feels like it gets past the surface of anything, and pulls its punches in the final act. Despite this it remains a fantastic experience, and offers a worthy new frontier for Atlus to explore.
Nikki Waln · Nov 03, 2024 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Encompassing mastery in almost every facet of its design, Metaphor: ReFantazio is a near flawless JRPG experience that shouldn't be missed. A ridiculously addictive gameplay loop that's overflowing with depth, visuals and sound that are some of the most epic you'll experience, and a story full of enthralling characters and themes, Metaphor: ReFantazio is one of - if not the best - games of 2024. Potentially, even beyond.
Miles Thompson · Nov 03, 2024 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - For a brand new IP that lagrely distances itself from its siblings, Metaphor: ReFantazio is a triumphant showcase of what the RPG genre can do and the way that stories can interact with our world. Every moving part is acutely designed to mesh together into a game that feels truly one-of-a-kind. Every line of dialogue feels perfectly attuend to its audience and deals with issues in a way that honestly floored me. The Archetype system is bold and inventive, building brilliantly on the foundations set by Persona, and it offers a completely unique style that far and away establishes itself as a worthy player in ATLUS' auspicious wheelhouse. An utterly phenomenal RPG that fearlessly exists as a story of inclusion, and of the power of fiction on the real world - such as itself. Outstanding.
JOE RICHARDS · Nov 02, 2024 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Metaphor: ReFantazio is truly unique and benefits from both a rock-solid development pedigree and a vision for original ideas. Genre connoisseurs will find more of what they love and newcomers will have a truly memorable first-time experience.
Daniel Smith · Oct 31, 2024 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Even with the flaws, Metaphor: ReFantazio is a masterpiece that sets a new standard for the classic JRPG genre, bringing over all of the expertise Atlus has with the Shin Megami Tensei series. A lesser game would have crumbled under the weight of such precariously loaded subjects — politics, governance, discrimination, injustice, religion — but Metaphor is able to navigate through them without becoming preachy or predictable. The epilogue in particular addresses the assumption that a hero who can fight villains would know anything about statecraft and tempers the game’s main conceit about the importance of fantasy. On that front, Metaphor’s maturity and self-awareness are real enough.
Luuc ten Velde · Oct 26, 2024 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Metaphor: ReFantazio comes from a mature, seasoned Atlus that has a firm grasp on its strengths as a studio by now. By borrowing elements of Shin Megami Tensei and Persona, Atlus breaks down the formula, tightens up the loose screws and rebuilds it into an incredible new game that stands on the foundation of its past successes. It might not make as strong of a first impression as Persona 5 but for Atlus fans, Metaphor is a dream come true and easily one of the best games of 2024.
