- Mercenary Kings is a slick old-school inspired shooter that has one foot in the past, and the other firmly planted in the present. Its high level of difficulty, catchy tunes, and pixelated graphics meld nicely with its emphasis on loot, customization, and online play.
Colin Moriarty · Apr 25, 2014 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Overall, Mercenary Kings does a great job of recreating the arcade feel of classic shoot 'em ups while mixing in modern-day mechanics to give a fresh feel. With phenomenal sprite animations, witty humor and addictive customization options over hundreds of levels, not to mention the addition of local and online co-op, it’s a no brainier for fans of shoot ‘em ups.
Garri Bagdasarov · Apr 14, 2014 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Mercenary Kings builds on the simplicity of classic run-and-gun shooting gameplay in an elegant way. The game is actually overflowing with content, but it's in the form of tweaks to the formula rather than giant shifts â a new enemy here and there, a gun part that completely changes your approach and so on.
Philip Kollar · Apr 09, 2014 Reviewed on PC, PS4Read full review - Charming art design, an infectious soundtrack, and compelling weapon crafting supplement the standard action, but too much recycled content, irritating technical issues, and occasionally confounding design prevent the project from ever surpassing its inspiration. The result appeals to an old-school sensibility, but you'll need to overcome some unfortunate obstacles to see the appeal.
Jason Venter · Apr 08, 2014 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - ...this is still an enjoyable romp that comes wrapped in a charming pixelated package. The ability to customise your weapons and armour is what sets this release apart, allowing you to inject the kind of personality into the action that its predecessors lack. The mission time limits seem unnecessary, but look past them and you’ll find plenty of fun here – especially if you recruit three real-life soldiers to share the frantic foray with.
Edwin Garcia · Apr 04, 2014 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Despite looking and playing like a 90's throwback, Mercenary Kings adds character and weapons customization options, and a novel mission structure to create a game that feels contemporary. Its content can feel somewhat repetitive, but by the time it does, most players will have already got their money's worth.
Jaz Rignall · Apr 04, 2014 Reviewed on PS4 - Don’t be fooled by the arcadey visuals and impression of immediacy, Mercenary Kings demands more. Its a deliberate, testing game that often feels like a slog through missions that retrace the same ground far too often. Mercenary Kings will no doubt find its fans, but they’ll be in the minority.
Lee Bradley · Apr 04, 2014 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - The bland mission objectives and lack of enemy variety quickly become obvious, but the constant pull of making better and better equipment is incredibly strong and will keep players coming back for more. A wonderful aesthetic and strong sense of progression make Mercenary Kings an excellent experience, whether playing alone or with friends.
Patrick Hancock · Apr 01, 2014 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Mercenary Kings is a testament to the idea that you can get too much of a good thing. The slick art, old-school shooting, and deep customization options are immensely fun, as are the stages that you play through – the first few times.
Matt Miller · Mar 25, 2014 Reviewed on PC, PS4 - Mercenary Kings is a game that has its fair share of flaws. Customization isn’t deep enough, your impact on the world isn’t large enough, and the variety of levels isn’t wide enough. However, if you are fine with the grind, you’ll find a game with plenty of charm, wit, and character.
