- Whether or not I can recommend Master Detective Archives: Rain Code depends on whether you liked Spike Chunsoft’s previous works and if you’re a fan of the detective genre. There are a lot of flaws with the game’s direction especially when it comes to its pacing and gameplay mechanics. However, if you can push through those, you’ll find yourself having a great time with this game.
Jarren Navarrete · Sep 02, 2024 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - While not quite reaching the heights of the Danganronpa series, Master Detective Archives: Rain Code is great spiritual successor to the cult classic and whether this is the beginning of a new franchise or if it will be a stand-alone title, it marks a return to form for Tookyo Games.
Jae Lee · Aug 16, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - All in all, I enjoyed Master Detective Archives: Rain Code and you probably will, too. The presentation is slick, the setting is gorgeous, and the premise is genuinely brilliant. Making rapid-fire deductions while dodging accusations and falsehoods is one way to make solving mysteries a heart-pounding experience.
Nicola Kapron · Aug 01, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Master Detective Archives: Rain Code is a great game that really goes deep into each of its cases to prove who the real culprit is, sometimes to a fault. The Mystery Labyrinths can tend to go on for a bit despite knowing who the real culprit is halfway through and Shinigami’s sense of humor can get a tad annoying at times. It also doesn’t help that after going through a few hours of how the crime was committed, you then basically get to relive the entire crime two more times which at that point just feels like the game is padding itself. Overall though, if you’re up for solving some mysteries with a purple ghost sidekick, Master Detective Archives: Rain Code is definitely worth checking out.
Russell Archey · Jul 25, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - The game’s connection to Danganronpa is palpable, especially when it comes to the audiovisual presentation, but Rain Code is also able to stand on its own and do its own thing. The visuals could have used a little more polish and the audio sync issue that happens during cutscenes is a bit jarring, but overall these are minor blips on what is otherwise an excellent game.
SebastiaanRaats · Jul 23, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - As we present final arguments to a court overseen by a busty death god, the detective gameplay, captivating characters, and enticing plot serve as compelling evidence for recommending Master Detective Archives: RAIN CODE. Pacing and loading issues aside, the signature brand of storytelling that made the Danganronpa trilogy so refreshing is on full display here. I genuinely grew to adore the pairing of Yuma and Shinigami by the game's end, and that’s a testament to how well both characters are written and voiced. There are some rough patches in this murder-filled mystery adventure, but it's a ride well worth experiencing.
Jordan Rudek · Jul 17, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Master Detective Archives: Rain Code may tame Danganronpa’s anarchic spirit slightly, but it also greatly expands and improves on its formula with a more developed world, bold visuals, refined gameplay, and the best collection of whodunnits writer Kazutaka Kodaka has delivered to date. This is, simply put, one of the best, most ambitious visual novels in recent years. Get in on the ground floor, because Master Detective Archives has all the makings of a killer franchise.
Nathan Birch · Jul 14, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Master Detective Archives: Rain Code improves after a slow start with some truly fascinating mysteries in later chapters. However, a central pairing that never quite works and long mystery labyrinths that are almost entirely uninteresting stop it from being all it can be. Fans of the Danganronpa series will still want to check it out, but most others should find another mystery to dig into.
Andrew Thornton · Jul 11, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Master Detective Archives: RAIN CODE isn’t shy about tearjerker moments, too. A wide array of different emotions is felt throughout the story. From laughter, sorrow, and everything in between, the story was well done. The cast of characters becomes ever more lovable as the game progresses, and It's great to see how Yuma steadily progresses into a seasoned detective. In addition, this game is chock-full of references to other gaming franchises, including Dragon Quest.
MChipmunks · Jul 11, 2023 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - As always, the characters are the heart of the story, as they entertain you with their wild dialogue scenes and fourth-wall-breaking teases. Shinigami is probably my favorite out of the cast, while she continuously pokes fun at Yuma throughout the story. She just feels like another version of Junko Enoshima, only this time, she’s actually on your side.
