  • If you own a PS4 don’t discount the fun and gameplay variety that can be gained by playing this free-to-play action game. For PC owners, gameplay with a PS4 controller seems looser and livelier compared to a mouse and keyboard. Don’t let the Marvel lore scare you away. I know several people that went in knowing just the basics and they still end up having a great time. Minimally, this PS4 version is a “must try”. Excelsior!

  • A large roster of characters and the lure of addictive looting are not enough to salvage Marvel Heroes Omega from a number of significant issues.

  • Gazillion Entertainment has made smart changes to every system, with plenty of new things in the pipeline to keep things interesting. The developer’s love for the source material is evident everywhere, and it’s good to dive back into the comic continuity after a marathon of Cinematic Universe experiences. Despite its flaws, the core loop of the game draws new players in, and its non-fantasy theming is novel enough to keep fans of the genre on their toes. It’s not a perfect replacement for the sorely missed Ultimate Alliance games of old, but it’s pretty damn close.

  • Like Steve Rogers, Marvel Heroes initially had its heart in the right place, but was lacking everywhere else. Fortunately, the game has improved enough over the past year that the results are about as dramatic as Steve’s eventual transformation into Captain America via the Super Soldier Serum. It’s basically a whole new game at this point.

  • In fact, Marvel Heroes throws open the Avengers Tower doors to an expansive amount of gameplay, whether you pay or not. I applaud the generosity, and fully admit that Gazillion scores a few bonus points for it. It's not the prettiest or deepest dungeon-crawler you'll ever play, but it's free and it'll run on nearly any system. For Marvel fans like me, it doesn't get much better than that.

  • The game attempts to patch some of these issues with a plot involving Doctor Doom and multiple dimensions and etcetera, and in this regard it's at least true to its comic heritage – but as comics have slowly learned over the years, piling on a load of cosmic wiffle can't transform a bad idea into a good one.

  • In the end, I don’t think this is really the game for either dedicated MMO players, or diehard Marvel fans. Many of the former won’t like the lack of true customization or group strategy, and, because of game mechanics, the latter will only get a loose approximation of the characters’ canonical abilities. That said, I think Marvel Heroes is uncomplicated and certainly entertaining enough to be a good primer for those new to online gaming.

  • A new costume for Captain America won't make the grind more exciting, nor lengthen the game once you've mastered your character. Extras like pets or additional characters are interesting, though not particularly useful. Right now, Marvel Heroes is rough. With additional content in the form of new instances or variations in enemy types it could, like Peter Parker and his metamorphosis into Spider-Man, come out swinging.

Marvel Heroes feels schizophrenic, and unsure of what it wants to achieve. In trying to add components from the MMO genre, such as heavy instancing and daily quests, into a simplified ARPG, Gazillion has failed to recreate the exciting gameplay that can be found in either.

  • While Marvel Heroes does some nice things, the Marvel license isn’t enough to cover up glaring technical and design flaws. As much as I wanted to like this game, I can’t recommend something that is, at its core, broken. In the end, you get what you pay for (or less, if you actually invested in this).
