  • Despite a promising hook and a convincing immersion into 1940s Italy, Martha Is Dead caters to a tiny audience willing to put up with disturbing themes, game-crashing bugs, and little sense of adventure.

  • Shocking content aside, Martha is Dead is a traditional walking simulator and it's no stretch to say that the movement is on prepared rails.

  • Martha Is Dead is probably the most disturbing game I have ever played. What I have witnessed is unheard of. This game deserves massive praise for bringing awareness to mental illness and trauma and the effects they can inflict on a human mind. The story contained enough horror, shock, and twists to leave me with much to think about and create theories. The visuals are unique and should be an example for future games.

  • Like a heaping of horror media, Martha Is Dead’s solid start and some nuanced supplementary mechanics are betrayed by its worst impulses by the end.

  • Martha is Dead may not be true horror in my opinion but it’s suspenseful and emotional. This is definitely a thumbs up from me.

  • If only Dalcò, rather than honouring his heroine by smothering her search for truth in confounding gloom, had abided by her love of illumination.

  • However, slight technical issues aside I feel confident in saying that Martha is Dead is one of the best titles I’ve played this year. Its gameplay mechanics are simple but put to use effectively, but it’s the narrative, themes, and the way this is all tied together that really stand out. It’s gruesome, grim, and will be hard to stomach for some people, but if you’re up for a truly gripping and thrilling tale, then Martha is Dead is a must play.

  • Martha is Dead is best appreciated from a distance, because while its narrative premise and setting are certainly impressive, the game itself is slow as molasses and frustratingly clunky.

About the game

From the creator of The Town of Light comes Martha is Dead, a first person psychological thriler that combines disturbing and dreamlike tones with a mix of history, superstition and psychological distress. Set in Tuscany in 1944 amid the brutality of the second world war as the conflict intensifies between Germany, its Axis power allies and the Allied forces of the United States, United Kingdom and its empire, the body of a woman has been found, drowned and desecrated at the side of a lake. Martha is dead, and now her twin sister must deal with the fallout from her murder, the acute trauma of loss, all whilst the horror of war draws ever closer.
