  • Mario Tennis Aces features excellent gameplay, a solid single-player mode, and a lot of fun characters, but its at its bets in multi-player. There are some annoying issues, but even at its worst, Aces holds serve.

Nintendo continues to pump out good looking games on its console. Mario Tennis Aces is sharp and colorful. It runs fantastically and the variety of characters and course look stunning in HD. The overall presentation just looks and feels clean, which is a staple of a Nintendo-developed title. It can never be overstated how good the design team really is.

  • The good news is that most of these gripes seem like they could be easily fixed with a patch. But the fact remains that out of the box, this game fails to achieve its full potential – which is sad, because the game truly is, currently, the best arcade sports experience on the Switch. It's a shame that Nintendo felt they had to rush it out to capitalize on Wimbledon and key features are nowhere to be found.

  • A great entry into an already beloved franchise, Mario Tennis Aces introduces a brand new tennis mechanic that although is difficult to master, superb visuals and a brand new adventure mode. However, those gamers looking to play this solo will struggle to find anything worthwhile due to the huge focus of both online and local multiplayer.

  • It’s a shame that the standard tournament and free play modes don’t offer a little bit more, but Adventure Mode certainly grows on you. It looks great, it’s bright, it’s colourful – it’s Mario. The challenges on offer are difficult but fun, and they’ll keep you going back until you master them. You can’t really expect any more than that.

  • Overall, Mario Tennis Aces is a decent game. It’s not great, but it could be with some tweaks here and there. If you’re looking for a decent new multiplayer game to add to your Switch library, it’s certainly worth a look. Unfortunately, for the content offered, $60 is a bit much. It felt like Nintendo was really trying to stuff in some extra modes to warrant that price tag, but I don’t think it feels like a complete package. Its core gameplay is fun, but I would wait for a sale.

  • Mario Tennis Aces is excellent in some aspects and a complete failure in other aspects. Its gameplay is amazing. It might actually be the best gameplay ever put into a tennis game… if you take the whole star shot and blocking gimmicks out of the equation. The adventure mode was too focused on boring and poorly explained puzzles as well. Mario Tennis Aces is still a good game without a doubt, but it could have been the best Mario Tennis game since the Gamecube days, if Nintendo hadn’t decided to be Nintendo and shove unnecessary gimmicks into one of its games.

  • The game suffers from a few oversights like the inability to set the number of sets in a match or directly choose a court. Having the ability to change from a split screen to a shared screen in single-console multiplayer would have been nice too. Other than that, Mario Tennis Aces looks and sounds great, and is something any Mario Tennis fan will enjoy.

  • Starting in July, monthly tournaments will be the key to unlocking new characters, with Koopa and Blooper for the first two months and an unannounced character in September. As long as the online keeps running well, Mario Tennis Aces will be worth revisiting. I still have my concerns of the new mechanics being a little too focused on the ability to block, but Mario’s grand sports return has more than enough good in it to make up for smaller miscues like that.

  • Mario Tennis Aces is a move in the right direction for the series and is a great way for Nintendo to show that they’re taking even their secondary franchises seriously this console generation. There were quite a few games like Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash on the Wii U that were far below the par fans expected. This game, though, will be played for years to come as it’s not only an excellent Mario Tennis game, it’s a superb Tennis game in general.
