  • All in all, Mario Party 10‘s addition of the Bowser and amiibo party modes are enough to warrant a purchase, but I only wish that the gameplay of previous games and the amiibo party modes was more liberally applied to the main game. Otherwise, this is a solid entry into the Mario Party series. If you have played previous iterations, not a whole lot will be new to you, but it is a very good looking game that plays well, and is well worth losing at least four friendships over.

  • While it doesn't do much to satisfy adult players, Mario Party 10 isn't really meant to. It aims to be a chaotic, haphazard mess targeted toward kids, and it succeeds on that front in large part because Bowser Mode rewards them for being a complete jerk to everyone else.

  • The sign of a successful board game is balance, because that balance is what lets you play a good board game forever. Mario Party 10, for all of its interesting experimentation, takes equal steps forward to and backward from that ideal. It can be fun — it can be uproarious, even — but it can also be downright insufferable. The latter will make you appreciate the former all that much more, but it will also leave you reaching for steadier multiplayer fare when party time rolls around.

Mario Party 10 strips so much of what I loved about past games and fills those voids with hoops to jump through to get that same satisfaction. I really want a classic entry in the series that started on the N64. Bring back insane 50-turn options that take hours and only get better as the alcohol gets less plentiful. Let me enjoy the stupid mini games they created without having to play a mode by tapping toys.

  • Mario Party 10 ends up feeling like an effort to streamline the series in the hopes to appeal to a wider audience. While Mario Party 10 is still a great party game and fun to play with friends, the fun is short lived due to small boards and a lack of any customization.

  • Despite its flaws, it’s hard not to have fun with Mario Party 10 in small doses. Obnoxious amiibo functionality and an overall lack of variety make it hard to recommend to anyone who’s not already a fan of the franchise, but those who enjoy a bit of Mushroom Kingdom chaos with friends might just find reason enough to give it a shot. Mario Party 10 takes tantalizing strides towards the innovation players have been calling out for, but its lack of commitment to any of its modes ultimately sees it fall flat.

  • In addition to the three core modes, there are a handful of mini-game options. Badminton conjures memories of Mario Tennis, and Jewel Drop appeals to the puzzle sensibilities of Tetris. ...Mario Party 10 feels like waiting in a line that never moves forward. It’s completely possible to go through an entire match as a passive observer and still win first place. Occasional mini-games spice things up but their appearance is far too rare. Don’t RSVP to this party.

  • As a total package, Mario Party 10 is still good—very good, even. But it’s easy to see where development took a wrong turn, where resources were allocated to the wrong areas, and why the game’s stronger points aren’t as fully fleshed out as they could have been.

  • Mario Party 10 is a decent game at its core, but it sabotages itself to the point where it’s barely worth playing. ...Mario Party 10 is a disappointing debut for the series on the Wii U, and I can’t help but wonder if Nintendo tried to do too much and ended up doing nothing worthwhile instead. The bottom line, though, is that all Mario Party 10 made me do was wish for the days when I got into fights with my friends after every round of mini games.

  • It’s not a great single-player game by any means. But it is sometimes fun and always addictive. ...The minigames are actually very fun and are easily the best part of the game. However, it would be difficult to recommend an entire title based solely on that aspect. There aren’t many modes to play around with, and even less variety within them. In the end, if you have siblings or friends who you could play against, Mario Party 10 can end up being a roaring good time for a while.

    About the game

Bowser crashes the latest Mario Party, the first installment of the series on the Wii U console. In the new Bowser Party mini-games, play as Bowser himself and face off against up to four others playing as Mario and friends. Control Bowser using the buttons, motion controls and touch screen of the Wii U GamePad controller in different ways, and wreak havoc as Bowser in each mini-game while the other players strive to survive.
