  • Loot River can be easily defined by the games it’s inspired by, but the overall execution defies the labels, creating something wholly unique. The game’s not perfect, but what Straka.studios have pulled off is an impressive addition to the action RPG roguelite genre. Innovative gameplay in a visually stunning world makes Loot River a great time.

  • Loot River‘s strange, seemingly disparate elements fuse in a surprisingly elegant, razor-sharp roguelike. The unforgiving progression may deter a few but excellent combat creates its own tangible reward. While being able to literally shift the world around like a game of Tetris may be Loot River‘s defining, identifiable quality, its individuals pieces fall into place so seamlessly you won’t be thinking of any other game.

  • If you like roguelikes and the Souls-like type of games, Loot River is basically a must-play. It has an ingenious concept that allows you to play for many hours, even though the game could be “completed” under an hour. Even though we didn’t exactly like the system where you have to unlock all the items before they drop as loot, we applaud the originality and the great game design that is Loot River. We will certainly be revisiting this one in the future ourselves.

  • Loot River is certainly a roguelike unafraid to explore new waters, but what it lacks is a refined loop. Constantly repeating the run, even in different dungeons, isn’t an easy concept to float. However, the game’s unique movement mechanics and visuals do a lot of work to sell the experience. If you’re looking for a roguelike that’s going to punish you, then check this one out, but try not to be too shocked when you realise there are no life jackets provided.

  • Overall, Loot River is a soup of so many genres: It is soulslike, roguelike, puzzle, and platformer. Therefore, it appeals to a very small group of people, which is completely fine. Loot River is much more promising than what it appears to be on the surface: The ability to essentially create a map for yourself is a very obvious feature and yet it is rarely ever used. It is a strange mix, but it just works out in the end.

Loot River is not a bad game by any stretch of the imagination; it, like many new IP’s just needs some tweaking to iron out some of its technical issues and I have no doubt that with its truly unique blend of traditional roguelikes with a dash of a block puzzler, that Loot River will quickly carve out a place for it on the ever-growing roguelike mountain.

  • Overall, those are only some small bumps in an otherwise nice-looking and fun experience. So, gear up, learn some magic, practice your fighting, and prepare to die for all the loot this river holds.

  • Loot River is a frustrating experience which clearly needed more development time, but hopefully the game finds its footing post-launch.

  • After a slow start Loot River really grew on me. It took longer than I would have liked to start progressing but once I did things felt good enough combat-wise, incredible enough movement-wise, and intriguing enough roguelike-wise that I put in a lot of time (mostly on PC) before launch.

  • Loot River reimagines some of its inspirations' best elements, offering players a chance to sail cleverly through each environment, grow powerful enough to slice up once-impossible threats, and unravel a story that smartly weaves into its gameplay.
