While Like a Dragon: Ishin! Might not be the strongest entry in this venerable franchise, its emphasis on weapon combat and an interesting take on historical characters and events makes it one worth experiencing all the same.

  • It looks and feels like a modern game but certain aspects do remind you that you are playing a remake of an older game. For those new to the series this is a great one to jump into as it’s disconnected story-wise from the Yakuza thread. There is so much content to enjoy and the different combat styles keep things fresh even if the story doesn’t feel too fresh.

  • Ishin is an excellent starting point. Although it doesn't tie in with the core series in a major way, Ishin hits all of the broad beats of the Like a Dragon formula to great effect. The result is a remake that doesn't feel all that dated whatsoever and proves that Sega and RGG Studio made a fantastic decision to finally bring this title to a much wider audience.

  • I’ve noticed from the start of the game that the combat system feels too fluid as players can abuse most of the attacks, especially when using the gun. Not only that, there are times when facing random opponents in the street, there will be times that the enemies will be using the same tactic over and over again with no sense of challenge whatsoever.

  • Like a Dragon: Ishin is worth the wait, and fans of the series are in for a real treat. However, it is a niche entry in the series and not one I’d recommend for beginners. In fact, the more of the main games you’ve played before tackling Ishin, the more you’ll get out of it. Nevertheless, it’s a great spin on the Yakuza formula, and I’m glad Sega took the risk and finally brought it overseas.

  • In theory, there’s nothing wrong with making Ishin! your first Like a Dragon experience as its story is wholly self-contained, but it’s important to remember that this is a spinoff featuring mainline character models appearing under different names. It’ll likely be significantly less confusing going from canon story to spinoff than the other way around.

  • I wasn’t sure what to expect from Like a Dragon: Ishin!, but I have to say it is a very well-put-together game that offers plenty of fun. Even on harder difficulty settings, you feel like you have a fighting chance, but the farming of materials will take some time, so it will eventually start feeling repetitive.

  • Sure, a full-fledged remake of Like a Dragon: Ishin! would have been the better deal, but finally being able to play a localized version of this ludicrous Yakuza spinoff is still great. Even though it’s a bit dated for those used to the Dragon Engine, the controls are still excellent, the sheer amount of content is staggering, and the combat styles at your disposal are some of the best the franchise has ever seen.

  • It’s hard to sum up something like Like a Dragon: Ishin! because there’s simply so much of it. You could easily dump a couple hundred hours in this game, though given how repetitive some of the tasks Ishin! puts on your plate are, I'm not really sure you should.

  • Despite being a remake of a decade-old Japanese-only game, Like A Dragon: Ishin! is the definitive version for those looking for a good action experience with a memorable and thought-provoking story, and was well worth the wait for a proper localization.
