  • With a finale that wraps up Lies of P neatly in a box, like the one Gepetto lugs around Krat, I’m left fulfilled and grateful for this strange and unique Pinocchio-inspired package. Overture, like its base game counterpart, is an excellent Soulslike journey that oozes confidence, fun, and a deep appreciation for the genre.

  • Lies of P is a very interesting game in the sense that it succeeds at emulating the look, feel and gameplay of From Software’s Souls games, most notably (and obviously) Bloodborne, but a handful of issues hamper it from reaching its full potential. It has some neat combat and RPG elements, as well as a fascinating world to explore, but it is also a bit too formulaic.

  • ...Lies of P is absolutely going to deliver on all those dreams of a spiritual sequel. It's a masterfully crafted Soulslike that doesn't do anything innovative but simply doubles down on what works - and shoots for the stars.

  • All of that is to say, Lies of P is a high intensity, high effort title that demands your full attention. If the prospect of a game with a very challenging combat system that will likely require dozens of attempts for most bosses as you slowly memorize every aspect of their movesets is appealing, then you'll probably feel right at home here. But to people who initially got excited about it because of the visual comparisons to Bloodborne, I’d say wait for a sale or pass entirely; this is probably not the game you think it will be.

  • Lies of P may well lead the pack of genre imitators, but the one area that it stumbles is its star. You can dress him in a vibrant rack of outfits (including one that nods back to the illustrations of Collodi’s book, with a conical yellow hat and a ruff like piped icing). You have the option, periodically, of lying or telling the truth. And he is a marvel of pure function: watch him crook his elbow and use the whirring disc of a joint to whet the edge of his blade.

About the game

You are a puppet created by Geppetto who’s caught in a web of lies with unimaginable monsters and untrustworthy figures standing between you and the events that have befallen the world of Lies of P. You are awakened by a mysterious voice that guides you through the plagued city of Krat - a once lively place that has been poisoned by madness and bloodlust. In our soulslike, you must adapt yourself and your weapons to face untold horrors, untangle the unfathomable secrets of the city's elites and choose whether to confront predicaments with the truth or weave lies to overcome them on the journey to find yourself.
