- Knack offers a refreshing return to the PSone platformers of old. The title may not be particularly ambitious, but it has a nostalgic quality that can make it difficult to put down. Checkpoint hiccups, framerate issues, and difficulty spikes prevent it from reaching its maximum potential – but much like the titular hero himself, the title will definitely grow on you.
Marcello Apostolico · Jan 31, 2018 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Knack may well get a lot of flak for not seeming to be a "true" next gen game, but what it is is a lot of fun, and those who are nostalgic for the likes of Crash Bandicoot and Jak and Daxter should at least try it out as Knack follows along their path faithfully.
Hugh Thomas · Jan 08, 2014 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - The bottom line is that Knack just feels off, to the point of being an inconsistent experience. It can be a good time and rewarding for skilled players, despite so many of its fights feeling repetitious and all of its encounters boiling down to the same bland square rooms with different backgrounds. And even with the weaknesses attributed to Player 2, the combat is at its most strategic and satisfying with a second player.
Phil Hornshaw · Dec 03, 2013 Reviewed on PS4 - Knack is a game with some solid core mechanics which cry out for a bit more polish and a lot more variety in the gameplay. While changing size is truly amazing, it doesn’t bring enough in the table to make the lengthy game fun, and it becomes quite tired after the halfway mark. There’s some great design here, but it’s joined by some poor choices and visuals. ...It’s just utterly average and repetitive, despite there being an underlying potential for something superb.
Blair Inglis · Nov 29, 2013 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - About halfway through the game you encounter an area strewn with a dozen or so crates, so naturally you smash them all open. Just one box reveals anything of value. It’s an effort/reward ratio that feels entirely out of kilter for a game of this style, and one that reasonably sums up Knack as a whole.
Edge Staff · Nov 28, 2013 Reviewed on PS4 - Knack misses its target market by miles with a game that's simply too hard for the young 'uns. If it's a challenging, ultimately unsatisfying and frequently dull chore that you're after, then look no further. Knack ticks all of those boxes with great aplomb.
Richard Walker · Nov 28, 2013 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - As a launch title, Knack is serviceable and can appeal to the hardcore crowd, provided they don’t care that they’re paying $60+ for what is essentially a, prettied-up action-platformer with dated gameplay mechanics. Knack had so much potential, especially considering the fact that Knack himself can grow exponentially with the help of relics, but the execution was lacking and the game proved to be more frustrating than enjoyable.
John Llewellyn Martin · Nov 25, 2013 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Knack is technically impressive with its utilization of extreme particle physics and bringing to life what could have easily been a Dreamworks animated film, but the gameplay does little to really satisfy. ...but most won’t find enough satisfying game or story behind the technical demonstration to warrant classifying this as a great PS4 experience. If you simply can’t wait for more PS4 releases, Knack isn’t a terrible game, but it will be forgotten very quickly....
Chandler Wood · Nov 20, 2013 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Ultimately, Knack takes way too many missteps to be counted among the platforming legends it reveres. My feelings toward the characters its pointless story spends so much time on ranged from indifference to contempt, and every time I started to enjoy the gameplay, a frustrating fight or by-the-numbers level would highlight Knack's design flaws.
Kyle Prahl · Nov 20, 2013 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - That said, although Knack is an exclusive title for the PlayStation 4, it's last-gen at best and last-last-gen at worst. It's an average effort with an interesting concept for a protagonist and a game that lasts for several days only because it's unnecessarily padded and punitive to a fault. Knack may be built on the blocks of charm and difficulty, but by the fourth level, those blocks topple over into a pile of excess tedium.
