  • On top of the classic Double Fine charm we expected, we found Treched’s mechanics more than satisfying, and when you consider the game’s approachability and download-only pedigree, the depth is startling. Additionally, the pacing is nearly perfect, with new weapons and emplacements becoming available just as the enemies become more numerous and difficult.

  • There’s absolutely no doubt that Trenched offers a deep and entertaining action and strategy experience, built on a familiar premise, molded into an amazingly unique perspective. It’s clearly designed to have four players get together, talk strategy, a little bullshit, maybe throw in some faux 1914-18 perceived accents, and get to battling those scallywag aliens hell-bent on dismantling your glorious world.

  • Trenched is doubtlessly a tower defense game, just one that falls further from the tree than most. Though it takes a few missteps, particularly the tedious scrap collection and the lack of a survival mode, it's ultimately another notch in Double Fine's belt. Enlist in the good fight and bring your reflexes, just don't forget to pepper your trench's steady aim with a little help from the turrets.

  • A lack of variety notwithstanding, Trenched is an action-packed and amusing variation on the tower defense paradigm. If you’re open to some mission replays and a little grinding, Double Fine’s latest effort could be worth a look.

Trenched is the best downloadable game I’ve played all year. Its skillful blend of witty writing, fun shooting, and tactical tower defense makes for hours of replayable gameplay. Take into account the loot grind that Trenched inspires, and the online coop, and Double Fine’s created a title I hope turns into a franchise.

  • Trenched comes together surprisingly well, and it's the way it plays and controls that makes it all work. Shredding the different enemies with your varied arsenal is quite satisfying. It'd be a thin experience if you were looking for something to play by yourself, but if you like to just saddle up with friends and blast things apart, Trenched is a strong download.

  • Trenched is a hell of a fun game that just has a few minor blemishes. From the grimly nostalgic art design to the thrumming soundtrack and exceptional voice acting, it's a slickly presented package from start to finish. It manages to pack just enough complexity into its strategy to offer a challenge without sacrificing action-oriented gameplay that gives a direct sense of agency and control.

  • This is obviously not a quickie release; top to bottom, it's polished and slathered with personality. It has quickly become my current favorite multiplayer experience on Live and is definitely my favorite tower defense game to date. My only wish is for more missions, parts and weapons, but the core experience is robust enough to come highly recommended. It's another win for Double Fine in downloadable games.

  • Eschewing the studio's usual focus on world-building and memorable characters in favour of finely tuned multiplayer, Trenched represents a departure for Double Fine. Those smitten with Schafer and co.'s usual shenanigans may be disappointed to see Trenched's narrative sidelined, while not being able to skip cut-scenes or conveniently restart missions in single-player is irksome.
