- Overall, I really enjoyed I Am Setsuna. The glorious scenery coupled with the creepy tunes sets an atmosphere to lose yourself in. The characters and story are deep and engaging, and keep you hooked. With only a few minor flaws, I can easily recommend this game to any fans of the JRPG genre.
Jemma Casson · Apr 05, 2017 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - There is something inherently magical about I Am Setsuna. This throwback to the past is a memorable one, that, despite the game’s simplicity, Tokyo RPG Factory’s reliance on traditional design results in an experience that rediscovers an age-old mastery in the genre.
Alex Seedhouse · Mar 19, 2017 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - From a presentational and mechanical standpoint, I Am Setsuna manages to lay the foundations for an incredibly solid role-playing game. Unfortunately, this experience is often marred by a wholly predictable story, forgettable characters, and dungeons that feel completely uninspired. Still, if you just so happen to be in the mood for a traditional JRPG, and you're looking for something to play on your newly-acquired Nintendo Switch, you should consider checking this one out.
Dennis Carden · Mar 18, 2017 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - A strong base game is at the core of I Am Setsuna, but it’s surrounded by some very depressing environments that make getting the best of the battle system difficult. Bundle up and get ready for a short story with a lot of snow.
Donald Theriault · Mar 08, 2017 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - I Am Setsuna aims to invoke the spirit of classic 16-Bit JRPGs like Chrono Trigger, but its obtuse combat and monotonous pacing keep it from reaching those lofty heights.
David Roberts · Mar 01, 2017 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - I appreciate where the thought for this game comes from. The world of JRPGs has moved on so much since that genre defining era. We often look back with rose tinted glasses and say “They just don’t make them like that anymore”, and there is definitely worth in looking backwards, but moving forwards. Maybe they were just of their time, and what makes them truly great are the memories we have of them.
John Whitehouse · Aug 10, 2016 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - I Am Setsuna is a mixture of beautiful, heartfelt, and depressing moments, one whose depth is unfortunately overshadowed by its over-abundant moments of shallowness. The worth in Setsuna may end up being not in what it did on its own, but the groundwork it provides for future projects.
Mollie L Patterson · Aug 03, 2016 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - It could have – and should have – been far better than it is. Held back by a lack of ambition and never daring to crawl from the shadow of better games, I Am Setsuna stops itself being something special. But at least it’s not garbage, and I sincerely hope Tokyo RPG Factory has something bigger in the pipeline, because I see a hell of a lot of promise.
Jim Sterling · Jul 26, 2016 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - I Am Setsuna manages to cash in on the nostalgia ticket rather well. In no way does it feel like a cheap attempt to suck us in based on something we already know and love. Rather it shows respect to its inspiration while trying to add in a little bit of something new. It doesn’t work out 100% as at times it feels overly grindy and the story is indeed a bit cliched but an enjoyable combat and progression system overshadows those downsides.
Shawn Petraschuk · Jul 22, 2016 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - If you're aching for a familiar and exciting JRPG, there's better to be found out there. While this is a serviceable option, there are plenty other more memorable ones out there.
