- While certainly a far stretch from an epic RPG story, there's still fun to be had following the girls along their journey. Fully dubbed in both English and Japanese, the girls feel lively as ever, including post-game cameos of IF and Compa with their respective, returning voice actresses. Sadly, that joy might be specific to standing fans of the franchise. Unsure what to expect, newcomers may instead find the humorous but shallow romp an odd premise to a lacking and repetitive game whose combat, the focus of its gameplay, is by far its weakest feature.
Nate Gray · Jun 10, 2016 Reviewed on VitaRead full review - Hyperdimension Neptunia U is a fast paced, high octane action game that is fun to play, but can be quite easy at times. The story mode will keep you entertained for at least 10 hours, but don't expect it to be as vast and as huge as it's JRPG counterparts.
Liam Langan · Jun 16, 2015 Reviewed on VitaRead full review - The questing formula is pretty basic and repetitive, with the other two unlockable modes providing little relief. It is a game that doesn’t keep you engaged for long, but while it does have you there, it provides good entertainment. The combat is a lot of fun in small bits, the soundtrack is top notch, and it’s a great travel game to help you pass the time. It’s not the best game, but it’s a good start for hopefully a new direction in this video game series.
Cameron Teague · May 18, 2015 Reviewed on VitaRead full review - It would be acceptable if every game were a masterwork of its respective genre, but of course that isn’t the case here. Hyperdimension Neptunia U: Action Unleashed offers a fairly robust playtime if you go for 100% completion. It also manages to be free of bugs, glitches, or even typos, but none of that turns this completely average gameplay into something more engaging. Without that key element, it just feels absolutely ordinary.
Marcus Estrada · May 18, 2015 Reviewed on VitaRead full review - While there are a few chuckle worthy jokes littered here and there and the combat is competently implemented, I can’t help but feel that it’s a very barebones experience that offers nothing new to the hack and slash genre. With the recent release of Hyperdimension Noire setting the bar for quality and creativity for all Neptunia games to follow, I feel this one just falls well below the mark. Better luck on the PS4, Nep Nep.
Jae Lee · May 14, 2015 Reviewed on VitaRead full review - The important thing is that people should not be coming into this expecting a game on the same length as an RPG. It’s an action title with a main scenario that lasts about a dozen hours. It’s a fun, energetic experience that will appeal directly to fans of the series and its parody-infused concept.
Zack Reese · May 10, 2015 Reviewed on VitaRead full review - Neptunia U is ultimately built on replay value, counting on players to repeat missions for better scores, gear, and the goal of reaching max level with all characters. There's also a new difficulty and extra arena mode unlocked after completing the game. ...As long as you can deal with a little skin and a silly plotline, Hyperdimension Neptunia U: Action Unleashed is a fun little action romp.
Chris Carter · May 08, 2015 Reviewed on VitaRead full review - HNU is a good game. It won’t bring anyone into the genre who doesn’t already enjoy the gameplay and it likely won’t sell anyone on an anime aesthetic that isn’t already there. If you’re a fan of musuo combat and witty humour, and you don’t mind some repetition when getting your fight on, you could do a lot worse on Vita than Hyperdimension Neptunia U: Action Unleashed.
Gareth Chadwick · May 28, 2015 Reviewed on VitaRead full review - A comedic script will keep you entertained as you hack and slash through dozens of stages. The shine and polish of games done before this one is missing, thus leaving it a shell of what it could, and should be. Fans of the series will undoubtedly have fun, but new players could get bored quickly.
