  • Huntdown is a heck of a fun and intense game. It has some minor control issues on mobile, but otherwise is a brutally good time, particularly if you have a fondness for its specific flavor of dark sci-fi action.

  • Huntdown is a retro action-platformer similar to games like Contra and Streets of Rage that tasks us with clearing our city of punk rocker baddies and defeating bosses in the form of bounty hunts.

  • Huntdown may not appeal to everyone, but if you have a soft spot for 16-bit retro shooters and '80s action movies (or if you happen to be a nostalgic gamer of a certain age), it's pretty much guaranteed to please. It's just as punishing and satisfying as you'd expect, and that's a very good thing.

  • Huntdown has been out for a while, but it's a good, silly tonic for players looking for a nice distraction from all of the heavy and involved open-world adventuring out there. It'll scratch most of your action itches and, if you're a certain age like me, it'll bring back a few memories of a bygone era. It's not the worst thing to think about.

  • Its strength is in how it never takes itself seriously, while the tried-and-tested gameplay and the clear attention to detail is a prime example of how to carve in quality presentation with a First Blood Survival Knife.

  • Huntdown had the foresight to get-in on that trend early with the understanding of how to make a gratifying shooter, making it one of the more complete feeling indie titles to date on the Switch.

The only real place this game stumbles is the lack of online multiplayer. I understand that setting up online multiplayer can be costly for indie developers, but I can’t tell you how the co-op is because we are currently in a pandemic and this game feels like something I would play with a friend over the course of a day. Luckily, the Steam copy has a screen-sharingfeature that means there is a workaround for the lack of online multiplayer, but I am on console unfortunately.

  • Huntdown takes everything amazing about the cheesy action films of the ’90s, the crazy themed enemies and the over the top dialogue, and puts you in control as you fight your way through a Running Man-like set of villains.

  • Huntdown is an extremely enjoyable romp that does its coin-op predecessors proud when it comes to satisfying gameplay and perfectly-executed graphics, earning its spot alongside the other retro indie greats…or just alongside other great action games, period. If you’re reading this, then just go and buy it. You will most assuredly not be disappointed.

  • While Huntdown's cloying one-liners and disconcerting framing can occasionally come across as grating, its captivating gunplay successfully mixes the chaos of classic run and gun games with the methodical cadence of modern cover shooters. Dashing through murderous strikes while you slide under incoming bullets creates a sense of cool that the game's writing fails to deliver, inching it a little bit closer to the heights of its many points of inspiration.
