  • It’s next to useless to the devoted who have followed How to Survive and have picked up every subsequent DLC along the way. Didn’t EKO Software learn anything from the record industry--that the trick to luring fans with greatest hits collections is to add at least one new song, even if it’s terrible? This is not a director’s cut, but rather EKO Software’s aspirational idea of a Game of the Year Edition.

  • The vast amount of content found within How To Survive: Storm Warning Edition, along with a mysterious story that keeps you wondering, the local and online co-op, and some very intriguing achievements, will have any fan of the survival genre hooked. It isn't perfect, but this should provide hours upon hours of gory, blunt object, rabid deer and zombie-filled entertainment.

  • Co-op boosts the playability to an extent, as it’s quite fun to team up with another player online in the story mode or in one-off challenge missions. Still, How To Survive is a game that’s full of interesting ideas that don’t quite gel smoothly. While it’s initially fun in short bursts, that doesn’t hold up past the first few hours.

  • Overall, it feels like How to Survive is a great concept hampered by the wrong genre. For what is presented it would have worked a lot better if it added sim elements due to the fact that combat is too slow, and the survival aspects not dire enough to have the flow needed for an edge of your seat twin-stick action game. Dead Nation is the poster child for that type of game and sadly H2S is missing any those core elements to replicate its success.

  • The problem with How to Survive is that it’s a little too easy to survive

  • Finding safe houses or triggering alarms that attract several dozen souped-up zombies who then stand between me and sleep are some of the most invigorating moments I've had with a game in recent memory. These examples aren't common enough, however, and with the largely random nature of the game, you may not have exciting moments like these at all.

How To Survive's big problem isn't what's there, it's what isn't - that it’s less half a game as half of several different ones, duct-taped together in its own crafting system to create something functional, but hardly desirable. It's an adequate twin-stick shooter, and a few years ago that might have been enough. With so many zombie games out there now though, one this uncommitted to its own ideas can never hope to be more than just part of the horde.

  • How to Survive is a challenging, but rewarding game. Its combat and crafting mechanics are executed fairly well, and I wound up having a lot more fun with it than I thought I would going in. Unfortunately, the fetch quests kill the flow of the game, and make you thankful for their conclusion so you can get back to what’s really fun — killing hordes of zombies with a sense of danger present at all times.

  • How to Survive: Storm Warning Edition is a fun challenge when played alone, and a blast with a friend, but Eko really should have put more effort into re-polishing it for the next-gen release. Still as addictive as ever, and the extra modes – Barricade in particular – are such comfortable fits that its surprising they weren’t always there, but it’s still a way from perfect. Of course, that’s not really the point, as there’s still nothing else like it on Xbox One or PS4.

  • Overall, How to Survive is a game that doesn’t take itself too seriously and it has no shame in showing you this. It has a fairly simplistic talent tree coupled with a very linear storyline spanning much less than the average title these days, a crafting system that becomes obsolete after a short while and a lack of save points.
