  • This is a shame, as the basics of Horizon work and the new things it does bring to the table are well executed. What the genre's greats manage, however, is a spark that elevates the core systems into a genuinely satisfying sense of galactic conquest. Horizon does occasionally manage a quick flicker of one, but it's far too quickly snuffed out to ignite any passion.

Horizon is an extreme example of that category, where a quarter of it is some of the cleverest design turn-based space strategy has seen in years, half of it is fine, and the last quarter is virtually unplayable. With enough patience and forgiveness, there may be a special game in Horizon, but that patience will be tested often.

  • Horizon has some stellar ideas, and a good half of them are executed well. Others could use a bit more work, or a complete redesign. Sins of a Solar Empire remains the gold standard for providing seamless transitions between the big-picture kind of strategy and the tightly controlled movement of individual ships. And while Horizon could have stood to learn some lessons from its forebear, it is still easy to lose yourself in it.od half of them are executed well

  • Overall, Horizon has its heart in the right place, but doesn’t bring enough to the table to be a stand out. While you can get lost in the game for hours without realizing it, sloppy interface controls, a just plain awful combat system and dated graphics are all making sure that you don’t get as much fun as you could be getting from game time. A good effort from Iceberg and L3O, but ultimately, Horizon is going to be overlooked.

  • There’s a great strategy game in here, it’s just lost behind the clutter of poorly designed combat and other smaller elements that drag down the overall quality of the game. Compared to games like Europa Universalis IV and even Total War, Horizon is often a little lacking in tactical complexity, but there’s enough here to keep even the most hardcore of strategy fans intrigued. Sadly, it’ll be the moments of annoyance that you’ll likely remember most after playing.

  • Funnily enough, it’s the most stable game I’ve played recently – as far as bugs and glitches go, I’ve not encountered any. But there’s obviously room for improvement here. Combat would definitely need to be beefed up a bit, and there needs to be more things to do on the strategic layer then spread like some pixel-based disease. Even the quests could be made better. I wouldn’t go as far to say that this was released too early or anything – there is a fully functional, content filled game here, it’s just not as interesting as perhaps it could be.

About the game

Horizon is a turn-based space strategy game of galactic conquest. It is set in the not-so-distant future where humans have just begun exploring the edges of their solar system. As humanity's leader, you will explore deep space, find new frontiers and discover alien artifacts hidden on long ago abandoned planets. You will also learn more about the galaxy as you come into contact with other species. Ten major alien races are featured; each with their own unique culture, history and schemes. A fully interactive galaxy allows you to navigate open space between stars and planets. Patrol your borders, and when the need arises defend your territory by engaging in ship to ship tactical combat.
