  • Here They Lie seems like a game made for a very specific type of player who values experience over challenge or even clarity, and thus will leave many gamers cold and nonplussed at its exotic design decisions.

  • There’s always been a joke that people try to make art confusing on purpose so that it seems deep. Here They Lie certainly feels like it fits into that category, with many of its story elements and scenes feeling like random nonsense rather than anything deep. While it has some really neat scenes that will stick with me, and a few scares as well, ultimately there’s not much in this three to four-hour experience that I can recommend to players.

  • It’s by no means perfect – its tendency to make you feel sick, the regularly underwhelming visuals and what many will perceive as overly simple gameplay puts a stop to any such notion – but it is a compelling and often horrifying experience nonetheless. If you’ve got a strong constitution and a taste for the weird then it may be wise to check Here They Lie out. There’s certainly nothing else quite like it amongst the PSVR launch line-up.

  • Here They Lie is not a perfect horror game – but it's tense and well worth experiencing if you're looking for some frights for your new PlayStation VR headset. The narrative could have been stronger, and the way it displays textures is odd, but the cavernous environments and clever control scheme make this a ride worth taking.

  • Horror games should present an exercise in nerve-shredding tension whether they’re built for virtual reality or not. Sadly, Here They Lie leans too heavily on VR as a novelty to justify a by-the-numbers entry into the genre.

  • Virtual reality is an experiential medium and Here They Lie has some memorable experiences. But it all feels fuzzy and thrown together. A game that features striking moments to serve a powerful story along with engrossing gameplay will be the masterpiece that defines this early medium. While this game touches on some of those points here and there, it never fully realizes its potential.

  • While the story of what happens to the main characters is unfulfilling, the descent into the hellish world of Here They Lie is, on its own, worth taking. Its dreary, evocative environments, dark tone, and horrific imagery would stand out even outside the realm of VR games. Some of its places, acts, and monsters will stick with me for a while.

  • Here They Lie is a successful use of the PlayStation VR, but outside of the novelty of transporting yourself into the veil of a unique hellish landscape created by beautifully tortured souls, the actual delivery and writing fall flat -- so I wouldn't worry about "not getting" anything, as it's all fairly clear by the end.

  • Here They Lie smacks of cynicism – a game designed with the knowledge that horror works really well in VR, without anybody involved knowing how VR games should operate. It’s distinctly unpleasant to play, and I fear it’ll be only one of many horror games that pull the same stunt as virtual reality continues to hold sway.

  • As a dark, well-crafted psychological journey in VR, the game captures the distinct duality of being a curious observer--and, conversely, a participant who simply wants to survive and escape. Its enigmatic visuals, choice-driven narrative, and provocations on morality are the driving forces that warrant multiple playthroughs, and all of those aforementioned elements combine to make Here They Lie one of the standout offerings among the PSVR's launch lineup.
