- While the main appeal of Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, – Psychosis and mental instability – was not for me there is still plenty of fun to be had with the game.
Seth Cano · May 04, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is a formidable concoction of beauty and psychological horror that’s often marred with a frequent claustrophobic sense of frustration. The rather cumbersome puzzle feature set in place would be something that I would usually consider as a weak link within a cast iron chain. Yet, to the developer’s credit, they have completely enforced exactly what they set out to do, sending my mind into a kaleidoscope of emotions that metaphorically ride across the five stages of grief.
Darren Palma · Apr 17, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Though the puzzles are bland and the combat is stretched too thin, neither of those aspects is bad enough to ruin the incredible journey established by Hellblade’s narrative. I can’t overstate how effective the realistic depiction of psychosis is at making Senua’s journey incredibly intimate and compelling, and a strong attachment to her character kept me hooked right up to the end of the story.
Matthew Zawodniak · Apr 15, 2019 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Hellblade is a screenshot-worthy game through and through. The environments are beautifully macabre and the character models are simply stunning. The facial emotions Senua displays are downright eerie at times.Hellblade is an amazing achievement in game design. It is something I think everyone should play.
Ken McKown · Apr 24, 2018 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice’s most riveting achievement isn’t how well it functions, nor how well it’s written and voiced, nor how well it looks, but how well all of that unifies into such a dark and compelling experience. The constant tension throughout the entirety of this unique and engaging journey will disturb you, intrigue you and stay with you, long after the credits roll.
Mark Sherwood · Apr 13, 2018 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - Hellblade successfully weaves metaphors of grief and loss into fundamental game mechanics and rich folklore, and through these I felt like I truly was able to understand how someone else sees the world.
Ashley Oh · Sep 06, 2017 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - At the end of Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice I felt like Ninja Theory had really outdone themselves in every way. I always enjoyed their games and felt that they were a talented developer, but Hellblade really took it to the next level. With its amazing take on an often avoided or misunderstood subject, fun combat, interesting puzzles, and beautiful graphics, Hellblade deserves a part in your library.
Samuel Guglielmo · Aug 28, 2017 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - While the slower, methodical take on combat is welcome despite its compartmented presence, the otherwise lack of interesting puzzles or anything pertaining to organic gameplay stops Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice short of achieving true glory. Odd as it may sound to recommend a game moreso on its story, Ninja Theory’s latest is an interesting, if flawed, entrant.
Jordan Helm · Aug 27, 2017 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is a clear example of a game as an art form with a strong message and a complex, layered narrative. It’s true that you’re sort of along for the ride and most of your interactions are through your emotional response to what is depicted rather than through the mechanics of the game, but is that such a bad thing?
Stuart Thomas · Aug 20, 2017 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Hellblade is one such a title that asks its player to step into the role of a woman suffering from an extreme mental illness. In doing so, it offers a glimpse into a world unknown- one of suffocating dread but also, one of breathtaking beauty.
